I have received a warning from my brother about a couple of viruses set to
go off this festive season.
One is attached to an email called 'piece of coal' and the other to a game
called 'Elf Bowling' (or someting like that). either will kill your computer
in the next couple of days unless you take action now.
Apparently.
If you can find them on one of the official anti-virus web pages like...
http://vil.nai.com/villib/alpha.asp
... then they're serious, and worth paying attention to, but on the other
hand if you're looking at pages like the above, you already know what you're
doing and will already be running an UP-TO-DATE virus checker so you've not
really got much to worry about.
If they're NOT listed on the above, or similar web pages, then they're
mindless email chain-letter hoaxes... for example:
Lump of Coal
NAI Labs AVERT would like to inform you of a new email HOAX. This email
message is just a HOAX, currently we know of no other message that the user
will receive about the HOAX as the initial email states.
Elfbowl
This is a forwarded email hoax that mentions a trojan payload for Christmas
holiday however these details are unfounded in actual analysis of the file
mentioned in the email message.
Do you feel stupid yet?
Everybody, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do at least a TINY bit of checking before
you forward these stupid hoaxes. Chris in particular, I've told you this
before, and you ought to know better. chat@ is NOT a place to spread
junkmail. How many warnings am I expected to give? What am I supposed to do
after I've given too many warnings?
