I gather that this week's film is 'The Ghost in the shell'. So what's it
all about then? I know it's a Manga film, but is it horrifically
violent, or is it one of the tamer ones?

I don't recall it being horrifically violent. It's a cyberpunky type
thing. The net has grown to monolithic proportions, and an interface
to the human brain exists. I seem to recall that Ghost in the Shell
was some kind of slang for hacking the human brain. I could be wrong
though. The film follows a couple of special forces CID type personnel.
It had the largest budget of any manga and it shows. Very impressive
animation. Disney eat your heart out. It has a lot of mood and at
times you do wonder whether someone recorded over your copy with
a British Airways advert, but thats probably the nastiest thing that
you can say about it. It's a damn good introduction to Manga in
general (though the best would have to be Dominion Tank Police)
though be warned the rest of the genre isn't anywhere near so well
animated.

It's no more violent than most films - it certainly doesn't have that blood
in it, but then most of the cast are cyborgs. *8)

Yup, I couldn't say it better myself (and I've got the blurb off the back of
the video in front of me *8).
The guy also did Dominion Tank Police too, incidentally - oh and Appleseed
(which I've heard is meant to be pretty good too).

I must admit, I've not seen that much MANGA, but so far I've not seen
anything better than that old chestnut AKIRA.
Yeah Akira's not bad, but it does tend to leave people, saying "Huh?".
Are The Ghost In The Shell (probably a dreivative of "The Ghost In The
Machine") and Dominion Tank Police significantly better?
Dominion Tank Police is a different style of Manga. It's comedy (dark
admittedly in places) rather than the thriller/horror of Akira. It
comes down to judging your audience, but I think that Akira can
bore people whereas Dominion won't.
As to GitS it's script and artwork are definitely superior to Akira.
I certainly prefer it, though whether I would say it's significantly
better I'm not sure.
Another one thats worth watching would be Vampire Princess Myu.
Difficult to explain what it is without giving away the plot but
it's a very good four parter. If anyone would like to borrow
them drop us a line.
