Universe

OK, it might not be strictly on-topic, but I was just watching the programme
'Universe' on Channel 4, and I have come to the conclusion that it has
fallen into the 'Walking with Dinosaurs' trap of flashy graphics, but very
little actual scientific content. Yes it told me that stars are born and
then a few billion years later they die, but the details as to how and why
were left out. Anyone else see it? Any comments?

Yeah, it was described as something like "If you got lost reading 'brief
history of time', then this is the programme for you", so I thought "cool,
this ought to be good", because, yes, certainly towards the end, some of
"brief history of time" was a bit heavy-going. What I didn't realise was
that they were talking about people who got lost reading the first page of
it... or maybe only the back cover...

Yeah, it was OKAY, and yeah, it was PRETTY, but you're right. I didn't learn
a thing... Except perhaps that a thimblefull of neutron star would weigh a
billion tonnes, the nearest black-hole is at least 5000 light-years away,
and a few other fairly senseless silly stats.
