End of an era

Hi Guys,

Sorry for the increased bandwidth here, but it seems a fairly
important topic.

Some of you at the pub last night, may have noticed the sign
up mentioning the refurbishment coming up. The Ascot will
be closing after next week for 4 weeks. Next week there will
be no food served, but Dave will be having a "drink the pub
dry night", with plenty of special offers on the drinks.

What wasn't covered was why. Our intrepid undercover reporter
Andy Palmer checked into it and found out that Dave is leaving
Sunny Egham for Northern Climes.

Dave has been puting up with IFIS for about 16 years and Gamesoc
for as long as it's been around. I think it would be appropriate
for us to show our appreciation in some way.

So far the suggestions for presents is fairly short. We thought
that a lightsaber would be good, being as he liked them so
much. Steve suggested a large cake (though whether that was
just what he would want we weren't sure). If anyone else has
ideas let us know.

I would suggest that people try to let as many older members
know as possible, it would be good if we could pack the Ascot
next week.

This also means we need to find somewhere else to congregate
for the 4 weeks refurb.

jolly good fellow" or something appropriate too, and a big card signed by as
many members and ex-members as possible.

Yikes. Had huge ammounts of difficulty finding anywhere for the EX-IFIS
thing once the beehive turned shit. Good grief, its going to be difficult.
Needs to be near campus for the students, but not ON campus for the
non-students. very tricky.

Apparently someone was saying down the pub that Crosslands doesn't require
us to sign non-students in, which would make it ideal since it's so close to
MLT. We can just herd the students out of MLT and straight into Crosslands,
ready to be brainwashed into being next years committee. *8)

They do, however, have to get into Founders first.
Could be tricky if they didn't turn up until 10:35, and then had to park
behind the tennis courts and hike over.

Security in founders is a joke - just show them any key and they'll let u in,
on the other hand there are plenty of pubs in englefield green what about an
IFIS pub crawl to find the most suitable??

If we were to have a pub crawl, maybe a good way to let students know how
to get to the Ascot would be to make it the starting pub. Obviously this
all depends on whether or not we go back there when/if it re-opens.
Despite any faults you might have with it, it is the only pub that really
has enough room for all of us.

Might get us a seat in the Happy Man during term time :-)
Isn't the point of the pub crawl to find somewhere where we can spend the
interegnum in while the Ascot is being redecorated ? Though I'm begining to
think the chances of finding somewhere agreeable to all are thin ...

(I want a couple of those chairs and one of the tables. Think Dave would
let us have them if we showed up at chucking out time on Friday ? ?)

Crosslands is still the best place to go while the ascot is 'out of
order', the only problem is that it is quiet small. you could always ask
the bar staff if they'll let you use the function room in crosslands, if
you ask nicely and promise to clean up afterwards they might say yes
(always worth a try).
