Good morning lads and lasses. I hope everyone's feeling a bit fragile after
last nights festivities. It definately reminded me of an Ascot New Year's
party and was an excellent send off. Counting up the number of years
"service" we had in that card was a little frightening though...
Anyway, this is to let you all know that I shall be running an IFIS film day
on a Saturday during November. We haven't fixed a date yet and it will
depend up on room availability etc but I wanted to announce it as soon as
possible rather than wait until the last minute. If there are any big events
on campus that we might clash with let me know and we can avoid that day.
The format will be similar to last year. Basically myself and a couple of
helpers will be attempting to turn the Main Lecture Theatre into a
reasonably passable cinema for the day. That means a big screen and big
sounds. We were able to get the light fixtures rattling last year and we
hope to improve on that this year with the addition of a chewy subwoofer.
As for the films, I'm looking to show 4 or maybe even 5 if there's demand.
The list I have so far is:
Cube - this sci-fi thriller has more suspense than possibly any other film
I've ever seen. Not bad for a relatively low budget flick filmed using one
room only. Slightly gory in a couple of places but nothing as bad as Event
Horizon.
Strange Days - this seems to have got some mention on the list just lately.
This is a dark film with some interesting ideas and characters. Some seem to
love it, others loath it.
The Matrix - need I say more. This has just been shown but I understand that
the screening was rather unlucky in it's string of technical hitches so
we'll have another go. This is an eye and ear candy fest and basically If
you can't feel the bullets from the helicopter / minigun scene hitting you
we've got it turned too low.
The Mummy - possibly one of the cheesiest films of the year. This film is
great fun with some wonderful battles and over the top characters. See it,
love it, just don't take it seriously...
This is my initial selection. If there are a lot of strong views then I'm
happy to chop and change. If there's demand I can also add a fifth film. So
let me know what you think. Should we ditch Strange Days? Should we add
something else? If so what? Films I have at my immediate disposal are as
follows although I can try to sort out special requests if they're popular:
