Star Wars : Phantom Menace Review *MAJOR SPOILER* SPOILER SPOILER

Are you ready for this?

ok then.,...



I have "acquired" a VCD copy of Star Wars phantom menace. Before you all
laugh, this is actually a very high quality copy, not the really bad version
with people coughing and walking all over the place, which the papers have
been having a field day over. Nope, we're talking very clear video, coupled
with VHS sound (it's a bit echoey for the first 25 mins, but then someone
remembers the audio, and it all suddenly becomes VERY clear), so my views
are not based on a bad copy.

And my impressions?

It's alright......

The film, storywise, is nowhere near the sort of quality of the later
trilogy. There's not that much swashbuckling going on (ala han solo), and
the space battle scenes are rather poor. No sign of the storytelling which
we're used to, and nothing like the build up of the later Death Star runs.
Nope, little anakin happens to breach the ships defences quite literally by
accident.

The special effects are top-class, as expected, but here's where the
problems start to creep through. Because everything is so obviously
computer-animated, you start to feel like you're watching toy story, rather
than a star wars film. (see gungan/droid battle)

The acting of the cast is okish, but Anakin really starts to grate on your
nerves after a while (see Droid mothership attack). And the less said about
Jar-Jar, well the better really.

The use of decoys for the queen struck me as being rather poorly
implemented. Ok, so the real queen has this very deep voice which supposedly
distinguishes her from her handmaidens. right...............

The only redeeming character is, of course Darth Maul. Although he is barely
in the film, you can't help but be awed every time he comes on screen and
tries to twat our heroes. Unfortunately, as said above, he is barely in the
film!

The aliens. well, computer/animatronic aliens i can live with. Aliens with
dodgy accents however (trade federation), started to become really
irritating. In fact they started to remind me of those really badly dubbed
chinese movies for the Americans, with those really bad accents.

Overall, it's an ok film, but it's nothing to write home about. I'm not
going to be one of those queueing up at midnight to see it, although I will
eventually get round to seeing it in the cinema.

Personally, I'm waiting for Austin Powers 2 :o)

Piccy quality goes a little worse when the sound improves ? Tis the same
version the papers have gone on about - the sound at about 25-30 minutes is
a giveaway sign. This is the same version that has definitely not been
down loaded off the interenet by all and sundry ;-)

Best have some spoiler space even though it'll annoy the hell out of me when
I try reading this off the web site in a year's time but hey ho....

picture.... I mean the bit where his legs go in opposite direction to his
body was a little gratuitous.

no, what I mean is that, I find it very dodgy that the queen, when she is
acting as the queen, has this very deep voice, and when she is padme, her
voice goes several pitches higher. I can't believe that that would be enough
to fool anyone :o)
I'm still looking for Indy Jones (apparantly he is somewhere). I've seen

But bar in mind than IV looks dated with it's old SFX; despite being a
better film (at least in my
opinion) and you may not want to bias agaisnt it.

Seeing IV-VI first has one side effect, there's the "oh-yeah that must
be..." reflex you get
in I when you know what happen in IV-VI. The same would not be true the
other way round.

answer than my previous one. Although I wasn't too far off the mark.

Obi Wan never meets C3PO in TPM - maybe they meet in #2 or #3, we'll have
to wait and see. R2D2 had a fairly minor role to play too - he could have
been any R2 unit and he certainly wasn't owned by Obi so his comment of "I
don't recall ever owning ...." stands true.

When exactly is it out in the UK? I thought it was supposed to have been
released already!
Yep, saw it Saturday night - excellent film. It is extremely funny (and
this is from someone who cannot stand Mike Myers!) but be warned - you can
tell that it has not been filmed in the UK (check out the road markings to
see what I mean) although they do make a comment about that! I don't want
to give away too much but the scene where Dr Evil and Mini-Me are singing is
hilarious.

Another film that I heartily recommend is American Pie - it is extremely
rude, crude, disgusting and juvenile but extremely hiliarious - I laughed so
much I ached when I left the cinema. One warning though - this is not a
film for those of you who like apple pie - you will never be able to look at
an apple pie in the same way again!

I suspect in that case, that you've rather missed the point.
The film is really telling the story of what's going on behind
the scenes. The Empire is approaching, the Emperor is scheming
his rise. The entire film covers him suckering the Jedi into
chasing some insignificant problem on an insignificant planet
in the far reaches of the galaxy. It's class.

The Swashbuckling genre includes Musketeers as well as pirates.
I was more than happy watching Jedi cut their way through swathes
of Robots. Not to mention the duel at the end.
I do agree here. The space battles were fairly poor. And as for
the design of that master control spaceship! You can just see
the Trade Federation deep in negotiations:

but I'm a little concerned that you placed the generators at the
end of the docking bay. Doesn't that mean that if a ship came in
a little to fast it could completely wipe us all out?"

The Farce is strong in this one.
It must be said in parts I did wish that they'd just used someone
with a rubber head for Jar Jar. At least that way people wouldn't
have looked at him all cross eyed.
It was fairly obvious which one was the real queen. She was the
one the camera centered on!
The Jedi knights were both cool. But yes, Darth Maul could really
have done with being seen a lot more.

But they did - during the filming, the guy who does the voice of Jar Jar
(can't remember his name) was in the multiple rehearsals (and they did loads
of them) with Jar Jar's rubber head, the outfit he wears and also had some
of the skin colouring on his arms. This, according to George Lucas, meant
that the lighting guys could see what lighting was required for Jar Jar
(although computer animated the lighting in the rest of the scene had to be
accurate), the actors got used to where Jar Jar is supposed to be and also
looked at the correct place - something tells me it didn't work quite as
well as George Lucas wanted it to!

After all the hype going through IFIS chat do you go and get a low quality
pirate. PM is probably the most eagerly anticipated film of all time and
you went and ruined a chance of reliving the magic that those who went to
see the originals in the cinema back in 197x experienced. For the sake of
3.20/7.50 of a cinema ticket you went and ruined a totally rad experience.

Personally I have not seem PM yet because of having my wisdom teeth taken
out but I am going Monday.

Also regarding all of you budding film critics. I have not seen PM but my
friend who saw it all before you lot did on pirate and at the cinema informs
me that the plot is a little bit thin and that the effects carry the film.
Afterall what were you lot expecting? If you look at the originals there is
not much plot there either. A new hope is a prolonged rescue, empire
strikes back, I have always found dull and can easily be divided into two
scenes and Jedi is 40minute ending sequence to the trilogy.

Next item of business: Starwars Cantina with Weird Al rocks but Yoda does
sunscreen...hmmm, has someone in IFIS just done a very bad impression and
dubbed over the song because it sounds nothing like yoda.

Also why all the fuss over spoilers. There is not much to spoil. I know
more or less what goes on in film now anyway from all the merchandising
adverts. speaking of which, what is the obsession with Jar Jar Binks.
Every company is marketing him. Also has anyone seen the KFC advert (a mock
training seminar)? That is most blatantly an American advert with a casual
redub.

What next, oh yes...who is trying to get someone to watch the originals and
special editions. Don't be so stupid and anyway, if you have not seen even
one Starwars film in 20 years then what are you doing in IFIS. Do you guys
know how long it would take to watch 6x starwars? Answer: approx 12hrs.

Lastly, Phantom Menace on DVD by Christmas? ha! even if it were true you'd
be lucky to get it in the US let alone the UK.

Well thats what I think.

Try to look at it more objectively. Try to compare the best and worst
scenes with the best and worst scenes in a few other films you've seen
recently. It WAS brilliant it's just not as brilliant as you'd
expected it to be because, it's not the kind of thing that "us normal
people" would camp outside the cinemas for.
Oh, c'mon, why should all aliens speak in perfect english? I think
it's only fair that they'd speak our tongue very differently, in fact
probably VERY differently.

I've been to tunisia, where they mostly learn english from watching
EastEnders (and it's also where they filmed most of the tatooine
stuff, but that's not the point), so they all speak english with an
accent that's sort of halfway between arabic and cockney. I think it's
quite fair that the trade federation blokes could have learnt our
language from someone probably asian but then evolved it a bit, and
the gungans could have learnt from someone probably carribean but then
evolved it a bit, all sounds fair to me. I'm just dissappointed that
there's not THAT much sci-fi where the aliens species struggle
desperately to pronounce our syllables through completely
differently-shaped throats or other appropriate speaking-orifices.
Earth Final Conflict tries to an extent... but anyway, back to the
point...
Go and see it... And pay particular attention to all the other
balconies in that big council meeting-place. Watch the flocks of birds
taking off in the "above forest" scenes. Admire the swirls of mist
above the waterfalls... Sorry, there's a lot of detail that you really
can't appreciate properly on the VCD copy. It it WELL worth seeing,
and it's well worth seeing on the big screen, possibly even multiple
times.
Seen it... in fact, I technically saw AP2:TSWSM and SW1:TPM on the
same day. TPM was definitely the better of the two, although TSWSM was
quite a laugh. Very very silly, but obviously that's the point, yeah
baby!

I've not read any of the reviews, or posts about them, so I still need to ask
the following question:-

Should someone who's not seen ANY of the other films be forced to watch the
other three first? Or should they just march off and see Phantom Menace now,
and catch the other three at their leisure?

(I have two such people in the office here, and I'm planning a trip to the
cinema next week.)

Get them to go and watch Phantom Menace without seeing the later trilogy.
Then make them sit through the later trilogy. This should induce a bit of
the "ahhhhhhh so that's what happened in the end top (obi-wan/anakin/yoda)
etc" :o)

After all, it is a prequel :o)

Now that's just silly.

I see no point in getting anyone to watch the original editions if the special
editions are available. (Unless out of academic interest for movie technology
of the day.)

The special editions were done by the same man as the originals, and represent
his original vision. As such I approve of them, and apart from generally
disliking expanding-planar-disc explosions, I think they're an improvement.

It's not as if he'd remade them using second-rate modern movie stars.

I suppose the point I was making (or rather thinking!) was that were are
obivioulsy going to see Revised Special Editions (i.e. Special, Special
Editions) after EP3 is made....
other wise (apart from anyhing else) the drop in the number of effects shots
(mainly backgrounds) would really make ep4 look like a suden change..... BUT
whether you will like them or not depends on how much of the original feel
of SW(ep4) is 'lost'.......

...... in fact to be honest I remember sombody saying the Special editions
were rushed faster than Lucas wanted.... hence those dam rings might
dissapear......

Well, from a personal point of view, I prefer the original editions. Not
just because I like the old 'ships on wires' FX. Don't get me wrong, the new
space effects (apart from the planar ring explosions Dominic mentioned) are
very impressive. I just think the old effects have a certain charm.

One of the major problems I have with the special edition of Star Wars is
the scene in the cantina where Han fries Greedo. I can understand that
George Lucas wanted to make Han look less ruthless, but there is no way that
Greedo could have missed at that range, much less miss by about three feet.

The other is the scene where Han meets Jabba. It just looks wrong. The scene
was originally filmed with a stand-in actor, who was human-sized. Replacing
this actor with a giant CG slug created a space problem which couldn't
really be solved. Look closely, and you can see that Han and Jabba's arms
pass through each other on several occasions. The whole scene doesn't add
anything to the film and should have been left on the cutting room floor.

I have happy memories of seeing them as a kid at the cinima...

I think the new canata scene (where Han shoots second) does nothing -
where as the
original scene actually went a long way in discribing Hans character (it
left me with
the feeling that Han was actually the "hardist" person in the film).

Ruthless was probably the wrong word to use there. What you saw in the first
version was Han murdering Greedo in cold blood. Not really the best thing
for a hero to do in what is essentially a kids film.

I agree completely completely with Dominic, in the first film Han trys
to
convinve Greedo to leave him alone and only shots him when it's obvious
than
he has no other choice. The fact he shoots first is Han being "tough".

On another note, the charcacters in SW:IV had more subplots and appeared
to
be acting on their own motives, compared to SW:I where the characters
buzz around
a single plotline (with one obvious exception which we find at the end)
and
only react to events. As a result Liea and Han are more "beliveable"
than
Amadia and Obi Wan.

You do not need to have seen the any of the other films to be able to watch
this - there are no references to any of the plots or details of the
original three films.

I know there's no reference to the plot of the other three, 'cause there's no
time travel. My question was rather to address the following points:-

a) Would it be better to gain a general knowledge of the Star Wars universe
(The Force, the general evilness of the Empire, etc) from films iv to vi before
seeing i?

b) Would enjoyment of films iv to vi be spoiled from seeing i first? (I imagine
it's going to be pretty damn obvious that Anakin = Vader after the first i to
iii.)

"luke, I am your father" bit, it's STILL going to be a surprise (well,
except that OUTSIDE of the film, everyone's been saying "anakin
skywalker, the young darth vader" everywhere - even on the TPM
posters, for goodness sake...

... but IF you've been living in a galaxy far, far, away, and you were
to, without any other outside influence, if you were to watch episode
1, then 2 and 3 when they're out, then 4,5,6, it would, in theory,
still be a surprise that vader is luke's dad.

So yes, from what I've heard, the films have been done in such a way
that you can watch them in release order, and there's lots of pleasant
surprises, or you can watch them in chronological order, and there's
still lots of pleasant surprises, just perhaps seen from different
angles.
