I've arrived & Crusade
Howdy all from Colorado!
Hotel de Kelly will be open for business from 1st August onwards. If
you wish to make a booking, please email me (my email address has not
changed and should not) at least two weeks before hand. The rates are
very reasonable - one large bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk chocolate per
week of stay (minimum rate is one large bar) - the chocolate here in the
US is absolutely awful. Space is on a first come, first serve basis.
Anyway, this mail does have a sci-fi content and is the first of many
reviews of sci-fi that is here first! I'm not sure if Crusade has made
it to the UK yet but I caught an episode of it here last night ("The
Long Road" for those who are interested) and without giving away the
plot (which I know will get me flamed) here are my thoughts on it:
* This series is very good and all should watch it. Even those (dare
I say it) who didn't like Babylon 5 should enjoy Crusade. Although
I've only seen one episode, it doesn't seem to have the huge story
arc that annoyed some people about Bab 5.
* It is well written, has decent plots and hasn't had too much
dumbing down for the Americans.
* It has JMS' usual concern with the darker side of people.
* There is another sarky Brit in it who seems to have all the best
lines - if you want to know which character, see below the spoiler
space.
* JMS still seems able to get some unusual guest stars to appear -
last night I nearly fell off the sofa when I read who was the guest
star last night.
* It has anther good-looking captain - but this time one who doesn't
smile all the time. He also seems to be a little bit more ruthless
than Sheridan and doesn't seem to have a problem going against
Earth Force. He also seems to believe in going on away missions
himself!
* Earth Force still seem to be the nominal baddies (they certainly
weren't very nice last night)
* There is still a wise, all-knowing character (kind of like Delenn
was in the first few series of Bab 5)
* All in all, it was a very good episode!
For more comments that give some plot elements away (but not too many I
hope!) see below.
If not, I guess I'll hear from some of you.

Ok, for those of you who want to know more:
The episode last night showed Earth Force ignoring the plight of the
local planet population and not caring how they got results. The guest
star was Edward Woodward as a techno-mage and the all-knowing, sarky
Brit was Galen (another techno-mage). The episode started off by being
slightly mystical - a very large, golden dragon is terrorising the Earth
Force people and ended rather dramatically. It also gave the actors a
chance to dress slightly differently than they normally do - think
spaghetti westerns.
All in all, it was a very good episode and means that I shall definitely
watch the rest of the series.
