Giles was in the room at the time that was sent and knows That I sent it.
He wasn't offended. Sorry about the spam guys.
Oh yes Funmail didn't get my real name, email address or anything when I
logged on so Nick would have had no chance of tracing it other than to the
stats lab.

Funmail addresses...

I am not so impressed with the "junk" e-mail addresses - they may be
filtered out by
the network manager as spam. That's a side effect of using a large
corperate intranet.
It also makes it a bit too obvious that the e-mails are not work related
etc.

That's all he needs. I'm certain the computer centre keeps logs of who was
logged in on which computer and when. Seeing as each email is stamped with a
date, time, and computer of origin (as demonstrated by Nick), it becomes a
lot easier to work out.

Exactly. I demonstrated that funmail tells me the exact machine it
came from, and date/time, and I have, in the past, given exactly this
sort of information to the CC staff, plus the offer of a pint, and
recieved a student's name in return.

My experience of this is very different. When I tried to find out the
identity of someone who sent such an email, I have been told to piss off
regardless of presence of offers of "pints". The usual response seems to
have been "I can't be bothered to get the data off of yesterday's
backup, and the logs have overflowed since then."

well, Nick could always put his ISP hat on and complain about some twat
using the college network to send abusive e-mail to his network. Bet that
would have them looking through the logs quick sharpish.

This means that you can make sure that the offending person is crapped on.
You cannot make sure that they will give you their name.

Lets compare and contrast....
Gordon - scruffy student.
Nick - sysadmin at ISP.
Hmmm....I wonder why they wouldn't tell you *8).

If my memory is correct, they would also have found that machine was logged
as being used by Giles's account!!!!
