These simply do not work as weapons.
It depends how you use them.....
The design suggests quarterstaff type usage,
but you can't use the centre bit to block.

If you try using it as a sword, you will chop your own bits off.
Darth Maul Uses his as a sword during the film using the clever notion of
ONLY ACTIVATING ONE BLADE ! You can simulate this with the toys by
removing one blade from the end.
And as a staff, you can only use the edges which is a very awkward
technique to be forced into. Give me a standard sabre anyday
The entire point of the weapon as both Exar Kun and Darth Maul show
is the element of surprise * when the 2nd blade is activated. In general
use as a sword with a surprise attack with the 2nd blade.
* Totally spoiled on the film by every piccy and the first figure of DM
illustrating the double ended lightsbabre.
In fact the 2nd (cloaked) Darth Maul toy comes with just one blade
activated.
