Probably a bad time to ask this question, but does anybody know whether
"Village Of The Damned" is worth watching?

John Carpenter, 1995, with Christopher Reeve, Kirstie Alley, and Mark Hamill.
"A strange mist descends on a small town, prompting 10 women to give birth to
mind-controlling children."

Off to IMBD, I guess...

It's on Saturday, BBC1, 22:15.

IMDB says it's shite. Somehow I believe them. (And yes, it is a remake of an
older film which was based on the Midwich Cuckoos.)
I might still watch it, just to see what happened to Mark Hamill.

Don't say that. "Slipstream" was a top film. It's low-budget, but it's
wierd. And curiously likeable. And it's got great flying in it.

Anybody got a copy - I really wanted to see it when I was younger....

Sorry. I kind of drifted into it when Jenny was getting Richard from work.
I channel-surfed, thought "cool microlight" and sort of watched it. By the
time that Jenny got home, I was hooked - and when she had sat in front of it
for ten minutes, so was she. She then played her "Star Wars Marathon" (see
La Jasper for details) with her character based on the central character in
the film.

I keep checking IMDB for it to come out on DVD. If it does, I'll tape it
for you - if it doesn't, and someone else tapes it, lend it to me too, ta.

The dodgems were a bit slow, but they were cool. The bouncy castle was
great fun. And we got dive-bombed by the fireworks. / :-)

As it happens I quite liked slipstream too...

Cue the free advertising for my place of work:
We've got it at the video shop... along with a host of really BAD sci-fi &
fantasy monstrosities... some of which even I couldn't face watching more
that a few minutes of...

Hmmm.... can you say "remake"? the original black & white film version is
apparently very good, but I wasn't even aware that it had been remade, so I
can't even hazard a guess...

Indeed.
I read it when I was about 14. My school had a surprisingly good SF section in
the library. (Also had "Starship Troopers", amongst other things.)

Didn't he write a sequel?

According to the IMDB the original B&W film had a sequel, and I can distinctly
remember reading plot elements that I think are unlikely to be in the first
film. I suspect that he did, and that I read it at about the same time.

The book is bloody good, as is the b+w film and the sequel to the film wasn't
too bad either. I believe it was called Children of the damned, and the blond
kids were only misunderstood, not evil.

A point worth noting is that the book is not called "Children of the
Damned", but instead called "The Midwich Cuckoos". It's by John Wyndham,
and I'm pretty sure it's in the IFIS library.

It's also good, yes.
