Due to the excessive amount of e-mail recent discussions on room bookings
has generated, the committee propose that all future criticisms and
suggestions about the running of the society be directed first to the
committee at: committee@ uk
who will then respond to the e-mail.
Alternatively, contact the appropriate committee member.
This will keep
IFIS chat free for sci-fi and plans for world domination.....

As far as the "too much mail" problem is concerned, has anyone suggested
a creation of a "mirror" news group server that would be an exact copy
of the list, but people could just read the messages they want without
having to download the whole lot first. That way we would offer members
a choice between being on the list and reading from the group as and
when they wanted...
Has this been discussed before, and if so, what decisions/conclusions
have been reached?
Regards.

It hasn't been discussed before, although I'm in the process of
choosing a leafnode-ish news server for LEOnet so I'll see what I can
do. Shouldn't be beyond the realms of possibility, although I doubt
it'll be any kind of "miracle cure" to the "too much email"
complaints, to be honest.
I've also been meaning to improve the archive on the web to make that
a bit nicer to navigate. I know there are a few people who subscribe
to "announce" only, but occasionally browse "chat" on the website.

We'll cross out that bridge when we come back to it later.

Too much mail shouldn't be a problem. The only time it is really a problem
is if you don't check for a couple of weeks (ie over holidays - but the list
usually slows down then anyway). If anyone really does have a problem with
the amount of email they recieve, I suggest using the inbox assistant - a
lovely feature of Exchange that allows you to direct mail from different
sources into different folders. It shouldn't be too hard to figure it out
(after all, I managed) but if anyone needs a hand I can give you some
instructions.

I dare you to make it work with a remote IMAP server. And guess what I
am running on my network? :(
Netscape, OTOH works fine with this.
So, again, Netscape 1 : 0 Microsoft. <grin>

I thought there was two list -
ifis-announce for offical stuff like room
booking/complaints/dates etc.
and
ifis-chat for general waffle. Could be wrong?

Well, for a start, I would much rather have a news group to have a read
through as and when I wish, rather than get lots of things delivered
through mail which just clog up my mail box and obscure other
potentially important email. I think it would be more convenient... But,
that's just me... Being awkward as usual...

I count less than a dozen. Hardly excessive.

So public criticism of the regime is no longer permitted?
Do you happen to remember what sort of a road you get by paving with good
intentions?
