library opening

Boo! its me again!

Giles and I will be opening the library this week on
Wednesday between 1 and 3pm.

Sorry to everyone who turned up after 2:15 last week,
but we were booted out of the union as we were
blocking a fire exit and health and safety were due to
visit. So we very quickly retired to the pub!

There's no excuse I expect to see you all there this
week! Or Giles will eat your legs! (Eh?!?-Charlotte)
And Charlotte will use the rest of your bodies for
karate practice. (hee hee hee-me again)

Last time the books were valued, the value was, if I recall correctly,
surprisingly far into 5 figures.

Hmm... I'm tempted to write something that'll feed each author/title
at amazon.com/amazon.co.uk one at a time. The problem will be if/when
there are multiple versions available at amazon, in which case I guess
I'll have to average it or something.

Look at it this way, there's AT LEAST 1152 books in there (that's how
many are in the latest booklist, and there's been a fair few added
since then). Even in the unlikely event that they were only worth 3
quid each, that would be 3500 pound's worth. A lot of them had a COVER
PRICE substantially higher than that... Then all it needs is a FEW
fairly rare ones (you know, worth something mid-way into double
digits, let alone triple digits) to push the average up a bit.

You have to bear in mind that some of them are "first covers" of books
that later became very very popular, and as such are collector's
items. A LOT of the books are out of print now, which pushes their
"replacement value" through the roof. If a book USED to cost 3 quid
many years ago, but is no longer available anywhere, how much time and
money would you have to spend to replace it?

This is exactly why the union, a few years ago, decided that keeping
the library in students and/or non-student's houses was NOT secure
enough. It's now in a locked cupboard in a fairly secure and fairly
well-guarded office in a fairly secure and well surveilled (?) and
alarmed building that, for many hours of the day is theoretically only
accessible to members. Basically it's damned pretty secure at the
moment, AND YET pretty accessible. Times square, on the other hand...
Good grief, if student's ROOMS aren't secure enough, what's so secure
about a student COMMON-ROOM? The same common-room which, if I recall
correctly, lost 4 or 5 TVs in one year (3 of which were in one term)?

It was a shame I did not know about the sortimg of the library, but then
again, an extra clone would have been needed....

I gather, though I did not see it yet, that a mass sorting of the library
has occured, allowing easier identification of where books are within our
squashed cupboard. This sounds extremely clever, reducing the mad scrabble
for that elusive book back there (somewhere). Also, a pile of Star Wars
books have reappeared from where they were lurking in the cupboard along
with Gamesoc stuff.

May I request that our fine and noble committee tell us on-list if they are
doing likewise, as I would be happy to help out with future re-arranging,
especially as I have a collection of books I would have wished to add to the
library. As someone who *can* turn up to help, but who misses most of
Thursday night, that would be helpful.
