LEXX

Morning all...

Just in case people haven't noticed, Channel 5 are starting to show "Lexx:
The Dark Zone Stories" again tonight... For any who've not heard of it,
it's probably the most bizarre piece of sci-fi wierdness ever to make it
into a second series, which will probably be shown after this repeat of the
first mini-series. It was originally five feature lenght episodes, but I
think they've cut them into 10 one hour long episodes for this run though.

I watched Lexx on Satellite (the mini-feature length series) when it was on
Satellite, and have to say that it was the biggest pile of crap (series
wise) that I've ever seen. It just seemed to be an excuse for a scantily
clad woman and a sex-crazed perv of a lead actor to ponce around for about
10 hours. It only *really* got interesting the last episode, with the
backstabbing knives and exploding planets and stuff, but, well.... watch it
all and judge for yourselves.

There were originally five two-hour episodes, which have been split into ten
one-hour episodes to fit it into the schedules a bit easier. Since then
(because that was something like 2 years ago) they've made a full blown
series, which should be coming to Channel 5 sometime, since they've already
bought the rights to it...

As for Andy's insistance that it's dire, take no heed - watch it anyway!
Having had a discussio about anti-heroes at the pub, this is a fine
example - it has (at least) one main character whose face you regularly want
to see grated off and chilli powder stuffed in the remains...

Very entertaining - and I'll admit, not to everybody's taste, but at least
it's vaguely original and not another trek-a-like and not a <pick a
genre>-in-space...

Sorry to be pedantic, but there were only four movies.

Hear hear! The films were great, and although the series has a new Zev (or
should I say Xev) and is even more about her and Stan trying to get laid,
it manages to be weirder still. Robot head 790 is excellent and Kai the
dead assasin is both strange and a reject from a Human League concert. And
as for the Lexx itself. The shower and food dispenser are both pretty
gross, but wait till the series and you see the toilet. It could be pretty
disgusting, or strangely exhilirating, depending on how you feel at the
time.

To be honest to start with I couldn't make up my mind.
So having sat through 2(?) hours of one, I watched another
to try and make up my mind. Some strange fascination
kept me watching that one too. In the end I decided that
any show that kept my interest that long must actually
be quite good.

I can quite believe that some would go the other way.

It does on the other hand, contain some quite cool ideas.
The assasin, powered by nanobots, that just can't die for
example. It has the same sort of wierd appeal as Saphire
and Steel. Mainstream sci-fi it ain't.

Did anyone tape it? And did anyone tape Red Dwarf, I managed
to miss both.

Yes, but she never does take enough clothes off.
It certainly does. Rather a lot of them, I think.
There's some seriously diverse SF concepts thrown together in that series, in a
startlingly coherent way. This is real, hard SF, masquerading as tawdry
titillation and crude toilet humour.
And throughout it all, humanity proves itself just as mean and shitty as ever.

Imagine a cross between Blakes 7, Red Dwarf, and Alien. I'm not sure how close
it is, but it's an interesting mental exercise.

I think that Lexx is a petty bad example of how to produce a TV series,
but it has one saving grace, it's difference. When TV is swamped with
DS9, ST:NG, ST:V, Red Dwarf repeats, Dr Who repeats, Xena/Herc. etc.
etc.
It's a good sign that someone is trying to produce something difference,
even if it does fall apart after the first 1 hour (I have seem all the
Lexx episones and some of the series and the first 1-2 hours is the
best bit.) If watching Lexx means we will get a better selection of
SciFi
on the TV, then its a fair sacerfice.

Was going to but channel 5 signal screws up my video so I can't record
anything on 5. ditto for Red Dwarf though, as Jenny & I completely
forgot about it. D'oh!.

Oh and also saw Dark City last night, now that is definitely weird
but good.

Oh, the plots do come together, gradually - one thin you have to bear in
mind is that the original 2-hour episodes have been split into 1 hour
episodes, so this time around we've only seen half of episode one... they've
not actually done much besides introduce some characters yet and start
setting the scene.
Also bear in mind it's not only a canadian production - it's joint Canadian
& (I think) German, and I know there's also some russian influence in there
too... Eastern European Sci-Fi tends to be considerably more... unique...
than anybody elses.
