I am pleased to hear that this is just an illustrative example - I'd hate to
think of someone actually falling for the promises of the "gold plated mains
plugs" brigade. It's probably worth spending some money to get fat cable
for the speakers, but you can spend ninety pounds a yard on "low oxygen
stranded silver" or some other nonsense. If you can afford to spend another
UK500 on your speaker cable, you'd probably do better to spend it on the
speakers.

And we know of wot we speak over here, as those of you who have attended the
Saturday afternoon video evenings will have heard. Most of the
interconnects on that system are bought in pieces from Bass Electronics and
soldered by my own fair hand. The most important step was going into a
hi-fi shop and listening to some speakers, and asking ourselves questions
like <click> "this costs UK200 more than" <click> "that - is it worth it?"
The result is that we haven't got the best speaker/amp combination in the
world - but we've probably got one of the best you can buy for less than
UK1000. Don't take our word for it - read some of the hi-fi mags. Or
better yet - and this is the big message - trust your ears.


You also forgot the most important enhancement you can make to your SF film
watching pleasure. Buy DVD. And buy it region-cracked, especially if you
are a fan of foreign (eg Japanese) SF - or you'd like to watch films like
"Zorro" at home when everyone else is watching them in the cinema. Watching
films on VHS is like listening to music on audio-tape. Once you've seen the
difference you'll never want to go back.


Now we are waiting for our fave films to come out on DVD, and buying them as
they do: the "Star Wars Special Eds", the "Terminator" stuff (again,
director's cut is called for) and other less SF relevent material. And, of
course, the new stuff. As they come out in the US, we build up a catalogue
- ready for the next film afternoon...
