Dear everyone,
We still have to choose the videos for the film
nights after reading week. Here are the suggestions that I got from the
Ascot last week. The one with the most votes wins.
Whats the voting procedure? Do we just vote for one film or rate
them in order of preference? I'll do the later here...
The special Star Wars editions are already chosen.
Cool.
If you have any other suggestions, feel free to pass them on, but you
must beable to get hold of a copy from somewhere.
A chineese ghost story - I know it's on the planned at some point
list, but I didn't notice it on the following list. It's a rather
cool film based on an old chineese story. Frankly it's a classic.
Outranks all those listed below. Place: 1.
The Frighteners
Possible the best film Michael J. Fox has ever made (not saying much).
Good film. Good story. Nice plot twists. Good special effets. I
little bit to out there for the mainstream, the style is reminicent
of Hudson Hawk. Place: 2
Judge Dredd
This ain't really the comic book Judge Dredd. For a start he takes off
his helmet. Far to Americanny, if you know what I mean. Err, there
must be something nice I can say about this film... Ah yes nice guns.
Kind of rotary cannon things. Place: 12
Star Gate
Nice choice. For those that haven't seen it (where have you been?),
remember that epic sci-fi we were promised with ID4? Well this is
actually it. Good plot, excellent special effects. A little old.
Just one question really, how did that probe manage to send back
it's location in the universe? Place: 5
Outbreak
This is actually rather good. Nice build up of tension. Spoilt a
little at the end, but hey, gotta have a happy ending. Place: 6
One of the Aliens films
NOT 3. Otherwise, I suppose. Would have thougth everyones seen them
to many times by now though. Place: 13
Screamers
Utter crap. If you can immagine Tremors, but without the humour and
set in space you'll be close. Place: 14
Ghost in the Shell (a manga film, ask Chris)
Rather large budget manga (japaneese animation). Manga splits into three
main categories, the zany, the mysterious, and the over the top. Ghost
in the shell fits into the middle catagory. It's a Gibson-esque future
with mysterious corps moving behind the scenes. We follow a "police"
black ops team trying to track down a rather nasty oponent. A worthy
introduction into that type of manga. However, it did have one of the
largest budgets and production team of any manga film, so don't expect
all other mangas to have that kind of visual quality. Place: 7
(Incidently if you want an example of the other to types of manga try,
Dominion Tank police - for zany - or Legend of the Overfiend - for
over the top. Be warned though the latter film depicts rape and
slaughter on a grand scale. If thats likely to offend then a better
choice would be one of the episodes of Legend of the 4 Kings.)
Dragonheart
Not seen it, so I vote for it to be watched first. :-) Place: 3
Eraser
Probably worth watching once. However, seen one Arnie film seen them
all. Not really anywhere near enough one liners in this though.
Place: 9
Doctor Who tv movie
I'd advise making this a triple biller though and doing it on a
different night. Place: 11
This film never actually hits the potential it offers. You can see
where the director was heading but it never quite makes it. On the
other hand it isn't a bad film, it just could have been so much more.
Nice special effects, some funny moments. Place: 4
Rocky Horror Show
Only if people dress up, otherwise you loose all the fun. Hmm, I can
just see Dave's face when people tromp into the Ascot THAT night...
Place: 10
Escape from LA
Same old hokum. If you haven't seen the first in a while, or you
haven't seen the first, then it might be worth watching. Be warned
though it is essentially the same film. In fact you get the feeling
that Jake's done this so many times he knows the plot by heart.
I can't wait for the third film, Escape from Harlem - "Jake Pliscin,
I thought you were white...". Place: 8
Let me know what you think
Luke
Well there you go.
