Yes, it has an 18 certificate, I guess on the grounds that it's "only a
cartoon".

For those that don't know Urotsukidoji, is about a culmination of
an ancient prophecy concerning the coming of the Overfiend, a
great god, who will unite the three worlds. It's extremely
violent, has scenes of rape, mutilation and murder.

We've shown it once at a video evening, and once at Freshers Fayre.
It has an interesting effect on people. They tend to just stare
at the screen in a mix of fascination, disgust and disbelief.

Don't get me wrong, it also has a decent storyline, character
development and some really cool idea's. But the sheer culture
shock of the violence is what hits you first.

And yes, it *is* that bad.

Probably worse.

Hmm.
Someone said to me "Watch Vampire Hunter D - it's got a picture of you on the
cover" (back in the days when I used to wear a hat).
So I bought a copy, and wondered why I'd bothered.
It's not bad, but I certainly wouldn't go touting it as worthy of special note,
on plot, characterisation, or animation-quality.

Still, maybe I'll dig out that video sometime and give it another try....

Yes, that was one of those I thought of on this occasion, along with
"Wicked City" and "Adventure Duo" (from the makers of Urtosukidoji ;).

but I doubt they would appeal to a lot of our members...

Ah yes there is that...

I'm sure we can show these as the "late night" feature after the other,
more sought after showings for the interested members of our society. ;)

Ghost in the Shell. The first (to my knowledge only) manga movie to make
it to the big screen in the UK. Well worth seeing.

Yes, GITS is not bad, and even though there was a screening last year it
is well worth seeing again. The music in the film is also very good
(well, I liked it...).

Cyber City Oedo 808. A bunch of caught ex-criminals are pressed into
service as police men. They are fitted with an explosive collar,
with a countdown timer, if the case isn't solved in time...

Seen this one, too. Highly reecommend it, all three episodes of it.

I could go on, but I suspect, that would be more than enough for one evening...

I think it would be a good idea to list as many good ones as you can
think of because that way we get more to pick from. Ultimately, not
everything we want to see may be available and if we have more to choose
from we can make a better "pick" from all of them... Or at least that's
how I see it...

Well, I never found that Akira is THAT good...

Whatever you do, don't show Crying Freeman or Doomed Megalopolis. They are
terrible.

Doomed Megalopolis is just damn outright boring. It goes on for hours
about how some hideous cthulu forces of doom will destroy the city. Who
cares!

One that I find very good is Patlabor (1 & 2). It may be a bit slow at
times, but it is really good.

Of course, there is always Guyver (Liam, where are you? ;).

OK, so who is going to volunteer a showing place for this? I presume the
audience will be rather limited, most likely due to fears that everybody
who attends will be labeled as perverted and be blackmailed for the rest
of their lives about it... ;)
