Last minute preparations

Dear everyone,
Freshers' Fair is only two days away. Whoopee! To
finalize things how about a committee meeting at the Ascot on Wednesday
At 8pm? Please let me know if you can make it. If you can't, don't worry
there isn't that much to do .
Anyway according to the clubs and socs office, we wouldn't be
able to get a refund if we used the print shop in Egham for some reason,
so I guess that I have to photocopy them at the Union.
Here is a copy of the flyer that I thought I could do a few
copies of and hand out at the fair. Impressions please?

Having said that, for posters and fliers your probably better off
using the union, as the printshop is only really better for double
sided copies of things. Well apart from the print quality anyway.

A... it's big, and some people on this list have to pay to download it.

B... it's in MS word format, which not everyone can read.

C... if anyone falls into BOTH the above catogories they'll be MOST
upset...

D... apart from the above, it's "ok". We talk about a lot more than Star
Trek, B5, and Dr Who, though. DrWho, in fact, is not that popular
these days anyway.

E... It's missing some of the obvious ones like X-Files. you might
consider adding a whole load of other stuff too.

F... Are we 100% TV orientated these days? What about books? You could
add a few famous authors.

Don't believe anything the union tells you !
I like the logo, though not sure how it would look in black & white.
I think you need to add a bit more, i.e. X-Files in big letters as this
is very popular and will attract a lot more members. also mention Dark
skies, millennium and other popular stuff.

Also add the following attractions of IFIS:

- Lot's of videos to borrow (Entire ST, ST:TNG, DS9, B5, Dr Who B7 etc
collection)

- The library, 1000's of books to borrow, some very rare.

- weekly meeting in a PUB.

- Free magazine

- Regular video evenings.

Think that's about it.
remember we have to advertise everything we do.

Oh, and you could try photocopying the a huge X (in the x-files font) as
the
background for the poster. I did this once when I was publicity officer
(for a video evening) and it looked very cool and got us an extra
30(ish) members

It's awful.
(The logo's not bad, but I don't know how effective it'll be in black & white.)

Where's the content?

Where does it say anything?

What about telling people all the contact names, email addresses,
mailing lists, web sites, meeting times/places, planned events, etc?

And indeed it doesn't mention books or libraries at all.

Luke, you _do_ remember we have a library, don't you??? Why, oh why does
your poster not mention it? Yes, people talk about TV programes, but IFIS
members have far greater interest in science fiction and fantasy themes than
that. It is true that there has recently been a vast expansion in TV/films
catering to such. However that should not turn a society which started its
career based around an extensive library into a TV-SF fan club. That is
ignoring a great resourse ie the library. Over the last few years this has
been unavailable twice, for a year or two. Now the library has a permanent
home in the Union, you should advertise it prominently.

I have just about finished updating the book list from our audit of
the books over the summer. I will have a few copies of it printed out by
Wednesday and bring it down to the Ascot. Nick will also be able to then
update the Web site. Someone will also have to put the extra books at 85 St
Judes into the collection at the Union. These include the newest books
bought over the last two years, and also a large donation from Tim and
Ingrid. Also, there was one box which was obviously not audited (or it has
been mislaid).

I have been told Ingrid has passed on SF/Fantasy type artwork through Adam
Hatterel. Is not any of that suitable? I believe Adam has it. Finally, in
your "speech" which got you voted in, you promised us regular Video
Evenings. They are not mentioned in your poster, and these used to be very
popular.

P.S. People pay to download these messages, and also you can attach viruses
to them, so please don't put posters out again like this. Ask Nick to put
them on the Web site, give us the address and we can look _if we choose_.

LISP: Lots of Infuriating & Silly Parenthesis

I gnerally agree with other comments. I have though designed some
alternatives, which I will have at the committee meeting (unless anyone
particularly wants me to mail them). Oh yes the logo does look good in
black and white (I've just tried it), and thanks Dominic for your
constructive opening...

This is a personal opinion.

Well it's good that there'll actually be a flyer to hand out. On the other
hand, I'm not convinced that this is it. My impressions of things lacking
are:

1. Mention of what the hell IFIS is? It's not even entirely clear that it's
a society although I guess this will be obvious as it's being handed out at
Fresher's Fayre. Some people are likely to read this after the event and
even if they *are* into Dr Who are not going to be arsed working out what
IFIS stands for.

2. If they do persevere and want to join after the fayre, there's no
indication of *how* to find us. This is a bit of a travesty as we *always*
meet at the Ascot and hence it's the perfect place to steer people as
they're guaranteed to find members. A small map wouldn't go amiss. Also
putting the web site address on anything handed out is a good idea as
people are becoming more and more Internet aware.

3. The listings of what we do are very limited. Sure members talk about
these programs but there's so much more. Why join a society to talk about
Dr Who? Who'd have to be a real fan to do this. If you liked books or
videos however then you might join for the 1200 book library, the regular
video evenings or the free magazine. So mention these things as it's
something that they won't get by a few of them chatting down the pub on
their own.

4. It has to be said that it'd a bit lacklustre in the presentation area.
As I said, it's much better than nothing at all but it is very plain to
look at. The first job of any poster or flyer is to get people to actually
look at it in the first place. Apart from the colourful logo (which I guess
will appear in glorious monochrome) there's little to draw the eye. If
you're using Word, make use of Word Art to produce some more interesting
results. Otherwise it ends up looking like a menu. Better still use a desk
top publishing program or graphics package which is made for the job. I'd
certainly volunteer my PC for the job if someone wanted to make use of it.
This can become a bit intimidating for non PC literate people but then you
can always ask such a person to help you out.

5. I understand that some IFIS posters were produced with artwork et al.
Why not use A5 version of these? You've got the immediate benefit that
people will link the two. Plus using artwork always looks a lot better and
gives the impression (ah those deceptive impressions...) that we're not
just a bunch of sad sciencey types.

6. Finally, if you were a real Dr Who fan, then you might snub anyone who
didn't spell the good Doctor's name with a capital "W"...


Anyway I hope this hasn't come out sounding too condemning. I've tried to
be constructive and I think it's good that you're putting your work up for
comment.

P.S. I won't mention the folly of posting binaries to the list as I'm sure
that lots of other people will have comented on it... :-)
