DS9 vs Star Wars & B5 etc.

Hi,
I think the battle in DS9 was terrible, why not split your fleet, or
outflank. If it only
takes one ship to slip though;splitting would have been a good idea. In
B5 at least they have 3D
battles where they try to avoid head on attacks (the resort of the
un-imaginative). Stars Wars is
only a little better that DS9 - but it does have combined arms
operations.
As for the fact that it would that too long to go round - rubbish!
compaired to the distance travelled
the short detort would be worth it.
Why did the Klingons go to the battle? it would of been better to
attack DS9 directly - as
they would have out numbered the fleet there and that was the aim of the
attack, or just send one
of their capital ships.
It seems that in the Star Trek universe, people like Sun Zen, Lidden
and Hart never existed.
Why not launch one of those self replicating mines at the on-coming
fleet and watch it
go bang!!!!
Anyway, did anyone notice that the plot in B5 Thirdspace is almost the
same as in DS9 Scropio???
Aliens from another universe, hostile to everything need to be
stopped...

JMS said at the time he did 3rdSpace to do a Cthulu type story - nasties
from somewhere else trying to come here ..... old tale - neither writer
would claim it to be there idea.
Malcolm Hulke, the Doctor Who writer (War Games, Silurians, Colony in Space,
Sea Devils, Frontier in Space, Invasion of the Dinosaurs) is quoted as
saying "All you need to write for TV is an original idea. It doesn't have
to be your original idea ...."

The whole of B5 is a strong parallel to to the Chtulu mythos...
Eldar gods = Vorlons
Chutulu etc. = shadows
Spi corp = evil priest
Nimibari = good priest
Beyond the Stars = Beyond the universe
Spells = psi powers
There is a holy book with great secrets (owned by a wise creature),
mankind is in the middle etc...

Hmmm. Yes and No.
Sometimes you get hints of it with the alien races, but the Psi Corps aren't
really cultists, 'cause they don't worship aliens.
The BIG difference however, is that the whole underlying point of the Cthulhu
Mythos is that mankind are irrelevant. At most we are an interesting hors d'oeuvre
in the twisting space-dance of life.
In B5 the humans are THE most significant thing ever, or at least, this time
around.
That's quite a change of emphasis.

I actually though the Psi Corp were very close to cultist - most cultist
try
to use the powers of the nasties to their own end. But end up as dinner.
This is close to what happened to the Psi Corp.
I admit that it close; but not that close.
I agree that humans are very important in B5, thats an issue which is
big plot development in B5 - something which never happens in Chtulhu.

Cthulhu often has plot developments - but they normally turn out for the
worse, at least from the limited perspective of the human race.

I presume you mean Voyager: Scorpion. Yes the plots were alarmingly similar,
and yes, both were rubbish.

Yes, I did mean Voyager: Scorpion, they were so rememberable I couldn't
bother getting the name rigth.
A common trick when ratings drop is to introduce some bigger and nastier
foe - with more
special effects. The Borg, the new race 1234 or what ever it was, the
Jem Hadar,
the ones from B5, even the daleks have all filled this slot.

Come on....
The first Dalek story was filmed before Doctor who was ever screened.....
OK Yes If Doctor Who ever needed a ratings boost playing the Dalek or
Cyberman card was always a good trick..... "Doctor Who is back - and so are
the Daleks !" was used a few times to launch a new season of Doctor Who
.....
