"To go with bold entreaty whither no man [has] gone before..."
(Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath, p. 307)
Episode #23: "The Nameless City on the Edge of Forever"
Dr. McCoy, having accidentally injected himself with an experimental drug,
transports to the planet below where he leaps into a machine known as the
Key and Guardian of the Gate of Forever, vanishing into the earth's past.
There, he changes history and causes the Enterprise to no longer exist.
Kirk and Spock follow him and arrive in Yemen in 738 CE. There, the two
join a band of wandering magicians, and Kirk falls in love with their
leader, Abdul Alhazred. Spock, having constructed a tricorder monitoring
device using parts derived from amulets, talismans, and a scrying-stone,
discovers that the mad Arab has two possible futures: he can either die,
or he will succeed in bringing back the Great Old Ones, wiping out human
life in the process. Having grown jealous of Kirk's affections, Spock
determines to give fate a push and summons a host of extradimensional
entities to devour the mad Arab (ironically utilizing a spell that
Alhazred himself had taught him); Kirk commits the most difficult act of
his life when he stops McCoy's mouth and prevents him from pronouncing the
Vach-Viraj Incantation and saving Alhazred.
