Web Site Updates
As unofficial Information Superhighwayman, I've been paying particular
attention to the bit about the website in the questionnaire that
people have been answering.
3 things (oh, and a bonus one!):
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly... various parts of the IFIS website have been updated. If you
haven't already noticed, we are one of the UK's official mirrors for
the Star Wars animations, and I've also put the "troops" animations in
there too. There's Asan's DS9 pictures, there's the Membership
Questionnaire which you can answer online if you've not already done
so, and the library search engine / reccommendation system is in the
middle of a re-vamp.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Secondly... One common comment is that people haven't used, or DON'T
KNOW HOW TO FIND the website!
The address is www.ifis.org.uk
You MAY find you can just click on the address above and it'll take
you there (depending on your email software).
In most modern versions of windoze you can click "start", "run", and
type in the complete address - www.ifis.org.uk
Otherwise if you can find a program called something like "Netscrape
Navigator" or "Internet Explorer" (which microsoft sometimes somewhat
naughtilly call "The Internet"), or any other WWW / Web browser, run
that. There will almost certainly be a box at the top labelled
"address" or "location", or "goto", or you MAY have to choose "file",
"open page" or something like that. type www.ifis.org.uk into
the box, and you're there!
I believe there's also still a link to our web page from the SU
website.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Right! Another common suggestion about the website was that we should
have more links to other sci-fi sites. A very fair point! Our
honourable chairman has just sent me a list of about a dozen of his
favourite sites, and they've been added to the top of the "links"
page. If anyone else would like to send me a list of their favourite
sites, or a copy of their bookmark file or anything, please do. You
can reach me at nick@ if you can't remember my "real"
address, or even webmaster@
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Which reminds me... FREE BONUS!
All IFIS members are entitled to an email address of
<yourname>@ifis.org.uk if you want it, and you can keep it for as long
as you're a member, so assuming you keep up your IFIS membership fee,
you could treat it as one of those "address for life" things. This
service is FREE OF CHARGE, but for IFIS MEMBERS ONLY.
Can't remember Chris T's BBC email address? Simple! Mail
christ@ instead! Can't remember asan's address? Why not
just email asan@ - it's far easier to remember! You see, it
makes life easier for your friends too, not only for yourself!
We don't STORE your email for you, but we forward it on to whatever
your "normal" email address is at the time (and you can change where
we forward it, whenever you like, by sending me an email). When you
leave uni, change jobs, change which ISP you're using at home, your
ifis.org.uk address can follow you around. As I said, an "address for
life" assuming you remain a member of IFIS.
We're a well connected site, we're running nice fast email software,
so your email should be forwarded ALMOST instantly (although obviously
we can't help it if RHBNC's got all sorts of nasty email delays
again).
If you want your own ifis.org.uk email address, just let me know what
name you want to use, and where you want me to forward it. Email
nick@ or postmaster@
