Not the most cheerful subject but I would like to ask if there is anyone
out there who could give me an idea of how the symptoms would progress
after a fairly massive dose of radiation?

I believe you're sick and you get the runs, and headaches and stuff,
and then your hair starts falling out.
Burns that are slow to heal. Redness, inflamation, and blistering of
skin, open sores.
Sterilisation.
All sorts of cancers.
Organ damage - EG kidney and liver faliure and/or damage
Reduced immune system response, so you'll take ages fighting off
common colds and flu, etc.
Tendency to bleed - nosebleeds, coughing/vomiting up blood, cuts take
a long time to heal, etc.
Weakness, fatigue, fainting, shortness of breath.
Tooth and gum disease.
