Welcome to the IFIS-Announce list...
I've just added yet another bunch of new members to the mailing-lists,
so I'll run this post again... Apologies to those who've seen this all
before...
... If you're reading this, you are subscribed to the IFIS ANNOUNCE
mailing-list. Most announcements are made by comittee members, but AT
THE MOMENT you can post there yourself if you have an important
announcemnt to make - mail announce@ and your mail will be
sent to all subscribers.
If you do NOT recieve another similar-looking mail, then you are NOT
subscribed to IFIS CHAT. You may want to consider joining - it's a lot
noisier than this list though, so if you're one of those people who
only checks their email once a week or so, you might find yourself a
bit swamped. You can always subscribe or unsubscribe from either of
these lists any time you like though - see later in this mail for
instructions.
To avoid confusion over exactly what should be sent to IFIS-CHAT and
what should be sent to IFIS-ANNOUNCE, I suggested the following
guidelines some time ago. They're not too strictly enforced, but they
seem to work about right:
announce: "Video evening tomorrow"
announce: "Christmas dinner arrangements"
announce: "sci-fi convention next weekend in birmingham"
announce: "AGM next week in ALT3"
announce: "that sci-fi shop in egham is having a book sale!"
announce: "New series of blakes 7 starts december 12th" if you're
just telling us?
etc.
chat: "New series of blakes 7 starts december 12th" if you're
intending to chat about it too.
chat: "that sci-fi shop in egham is actually quite expensive"
chat: "where's our bloody library"
chat: "grumble moan insult jenny whine whinge"
chat: "gripe mutter insult jacqui whilst we're at it, criticise nag"
chat: "Why have I got too much email"
chat: "how should we REALLY split the list"
chat: "what should we do about all these damned ex-students"
chat: "what should we do about all these damned students"
chat: "borg v death-star, value of pi near black holes, etc etc etc"
chat: "isn't terry's / douglass' / whoever's new book really cool?"
etc
ifis-chat should probably be the kind of stuff we TALK about down at
the pub. ifis-announce should probably be the kind of stuff we grab
everyone's attention for and SHOUT about down at the pub, and/or put
up posters for, give out leaflets, etc.
Also, in case it's not obvious, if you want to CHAT about something
that's just been ANNOUNCED, you do your CHATting on the CHAT list.
These are just my guidelines. As you can see, I'm not even certain
about all of them myself. Better suggestions are welcome.
If you would like to change which listss you're subscribed to, please
mail nick@ or use the form that's on the web pages -
www.ifis.org.uk - under the "mailing-list" section.
