video evenings

Does the commitee/ anyone else have ideas for videos they want shown this
year? If you intend to go for every Thursday, I guess you need some ideas
damn soon, if you are to print out date schedules to draw in students.

Here's my few ideas:

Contact - which we own on DVD, and could set up for a special with a
projector, I guess.

The Fifth Element- which I *want* us to get on DVD.

The John Carpentor film Them, which all X files players should see, if they
are as remiss as I was until this summer :-)

Are you, perhaps, referring to the film "They" by Carpenter? Or is it a
different film by the same director? Or am I not remembering the title
correctly...

In fact I have a feeling that Jenny is referring to "They Live" which indeed
everyone should see.

On the subject of video evenings I've dropped a discrete line to the Clubs &
Socs Officer about showing films, both local and foreign. I didn't mention IFIS
so there was no danger of a problem. He confirmed that so long as it wasn't
charged, there was no problem. This means that we can quite happily show films
from our growing collection of DVDs (similar to Laser Disks). Apart from higher
quality picture and sound, these are American releases and as such are available
far before their VHS counterparts and in an uncut form. For example I've had
Dark City for around 5 weeks which I don't think is available for rental yet and
"Lost in Space" is out next week. Although I wouldn't want to lug the kit around
very often I'd be happy to set up an occasional triple bill evening such as we
have run in the past. If we use Arts Lecture Theatre 3 we also get the benefit
of a projector meaning we can show big screen films far before anyone else.
Considering the poularity of the Star Wars evening this could generate quite a
few members. Would this be of interest?

Anybody know when recordable DVD is out for TV ? People tell me you can get
it for PC already..

And Richard - do you know how much your (presumably Zone 0) DVD player cost

Recordable DVD hasn't been announced as yet. You can get recordable DVD drives
for a PC but these don't conform to any standard set out by the DVD consortium
and in fact there are currently 2 competing standards for recordable DVD out
there. Bear in mind that all this will do is take data and write it to a DVD. To
record broadcast television you'd need a real time MPEG2 encoder to turn the
pictures into a digital form. The first such encoder has just been announched
but it's not cheap. My guess is that it'll be at least nine months before we'll
see a stand alone DVD player that will record off the TV.

As for costs, a DVD drive for a PC will set you back about 180 including the
decoder card. And no, it's not region 0 - it can be set to any region as often
as you want.

Sorry if this is off topic. I suggest any continuation of this thread should be
off list. I suppose you could tenuously suggest that recordable DVD is still
science fiction...

It looks as if we might start the first video evening with Starship
troopers. A
final decision will be made tonight when the committee meets at my
house. We will work out what other films we will show so we we can
advertise them at Freshers fair.
