B5 film & C4 (Minimal Spoilers)
TNT having shelved out a considerable ammount of cash to make B5 S5 can't be
balmed for wanting to show the product to their subscribers first. Imagine
how we'd feel if (unlikely I know) the BBC made a science fiction series
(see I told you it was unlikely) and then allowed it's all important final
eps to be shown first in the states. Now I know there is a precedent
(Crysalis in S1, Divided Loyalties - Fall of Night (4eps) in the 2nd &
Walkabout - Z'Ha'Dum in the 3rd) but this is _THE_ end so .....
Having said all that I'd rather see them NOW rather than later just to
proove my Sheridan theory ...
The films. I believe that the first films - like the books and the omics
are meant to be filling out some of the detail around the show. The show
is the thing, the stuff round the edges that adds some colour - for example
one of the earlier comics showed Sinclair & Garibaldi, the shadow ship on
Mars, and the psi corp research facility (Now who's corp badge was that ?)
but I digress (and continue to do so very frequently below - many apologies.
Zathras has trouble keeping min on job in hand)....
Thanks to In The Begining (ITB from now on) we know _where_ Valen's ship was
going when it met the Humans, Why Delenn went to see Kosh in Crysalis, what
the rangers did in the war. We saw how Sheridan took out the Blackstar
(where were the 2 support cruisers ? - see Pts of Departure) How Sheridan
met Franklin & G'Kar (go watch P of D & Revalations and see how clever doing
that was - I mean Sheridan was willing to take a _HUGE_ risk for an officer
he'd only just met - Franklin - by plugging himself into the machine - ITB
shows us they knew each other already) Sheridan and Delenn's first (brief)
meeting. The film show us General Leftcourt (who's sent to hunt down
Sheridan in End Game) and we're able to see him as perhaps not just another
disposable character in an General's costume.
Now while Thirdspace & River of Souls may also not be essential to our
understanding of the B5 universe - but may also help fill in some of the
stuff round the edges - "River of Souls" - now who does that imply ? and did
you note they didn't show the footage of them in ITB ? - A Call To Arms is
probably essential to the setting up of the Crusade story line - did any of
you catch the sneak referance to the Excaliber last week ?
To sum up: I enjoyed ITB. I also didn't think it added that much that was
essential to the syoryline - but it did fill in the stuff round the edges.
For those wishing to fill in more of the stuff round the edges try "The
Shadow Within" by Jeanne Cavelos (Anna/Morden/Sheridan) "To Dream in The
City of Sorrows" by Katherine Drenan (Sinclair/Catherine Sakai/Marcus Cole)
and "Shadows Past and Present" a collection of B5 v1 5-8
(Sinclair/Garibaldi/Kefler)
