Now I was reading Dr.Who magazine the other day, and I found an
interesting idea which rivals my own conspiracy theory (that Ridley
Scott ripped off the idea for Alien from Dr.Who, seeing as he used to
work for the BBC). In fact, this one is downright spooky if it's just a
coincidence. (Luke's read this article so he will confirm what I say,
unless he gave up on it - it's the one about Dr.Who monsters)
Look at the Borg. Now I know the idea of cybernetic humans is nothing
new, but these ones go around space "assimilating" or "recruiting" other
humanoids into their race. The fact that they have (vaguely) human
faces rather than blank holes for eyes and slits for mouths doesn't stop
them being a blatant rip-off of the Cybermen. And I'll tell you why...
remember their introductory episode? Where Q flung the Enterprise into
Borg space? It was called "Q Who"... why? It makes no sense, unless
it's the writers' way of acknowledging their sources! Of course, I
always knew they were a rip-off - it's just this particular article gave
me some proof!
Oh, and let's not forget the Borg's catchphrase - "Resistance is
futile!", a cliched line Dr.Who is insulted for using so often!
On the other hand, the Borg aren't scared of gold, can only be killed by
guns until they adapt (and don't give up their own guns very easily!),
and don't claim to be logical yet come out with lines like "Excellent!"!
(And all their stories have been good, too - ever see Silver Nemesis or
Revenge of the Cybermen?)
That is all I shall say on this subject. Let battle commence!
