Hello all
Got bored whilst waiting for the grand prix to start.
Felt a bit creative.
No idea who does the ifis homepage here, but any way we can have this
replace the old ifis one?

Comments are welcome. Criticisms will probably be printed and rolled up

A bit dark and heavy on the ink but that might jsut be the monitor I'm
looking at it on
Show off.... by the way, you can view avi's in DOS with the right
software as well
Try either animagic or GIFconstructor kit, both around on the net
somewhere.

Got bored during the Grand Prix...
Very nice, but again, a little dark.
Ran at approx a frame every 2 seconds. On campus. Now imagine it over a
slow link.
I use MS GIF Animator. (ducks for cover)

It's meant to have the black background, but it looks best in 24-bit
colour.
It's supposed to. I couldn't be arsed to render 60 frames, so just did 15
:)
not available any more, part of some microsoft package now. A copy would
be handy :)

I just felt that the current ifis logo is a bit.... basic ( no offence to

Personally I like the one Richard scanned in off a RWAV and is using on the
Gamesoc webpages (http://www.gamesoc.lucid.co.uk/Magazine/ifis.gif).
Anyway - Anim gifs are the spawn of satan and I doubt Nick (He who runneth
the webpages) would be inclined to use one?

I've made a link to that one. It's OK.
Put it this way... I, myself, personally, dislike them, particularly
when I spend 5 minutes downloading an animated logo that would have
been easier to read, and served it's point better, if it had just been
static. I'm not talking about asan's IFIS logo here, just an annoying
trend that I've started to notice.

If, however, everybody else decides that a large animated
bandwidth-hogging beast of a logo is more appropriate, then I may be
forced to be democratic about it. :-/

I would like to point out at this stage...

The old logo is 2153 bytes long.
Asan's new logo is 7827 bytes long.
The animation (which is only a few frames long at the moment) is
498798 bytes long already.

The actual text of the page itself - IE the info that people are
REALLY going there for, is currently 1725 bytes long.

IN FACT, the sum total of all the text on the pages (excluding
archives of the mailing-lists) is only 121140 bytes, less than a
quarter of the animation.

I've got nothing against the PRINCIPLE of animated GIFs, just that in
practice, they're supposed to make my web-browsing experience so much
more interesting, and they nearly always do the exact opposite.

Yeah, i don't like animated GIF's either. It's just that the little anim
i've done is in avi format, which probably won't be much use to any one
not using windows

Thought i could convert to animated gif, so that anyone with a browser
could look at it.

The reason i didn't do more frames, is because then the file would have
grown to at least a meg, which is not good.

I won't subject you to my rant about people using the words "atmospheric"
to cover up the fact that they were forced to make things dark in order
to avoid people seeing how bad the models/animation/sets/makeup are.

The movies know who they are.
24 bit colour or not, the things are still far too dark. It's not as
if your even trying to hide something. Brighten it up. Put some
yellow in there or something.

Err. On second thoughts, forget the yellow.

Hah. Have you ever watched Aliens with the constrast and brightness
turned up? Sinbad and his Skeletons (sp?) puts those aliens to shame.
Their really quite pathetic. But when you can't quite see them, they
look so much better. You'll notice in Aliens: Resurection, you can
clearly see all the aliens.

[Several deep breathes, pauses to wipe foam from mouth]

Ooops, I said I wasn't going to rant about it. Bugger.

This is the difference between brightness and contrast on a TV. Dunno
what you call it in your image-processing package. Instead of ADDING
to the colour values, you want to MULTIPLY them a bit.

Man, that logo is cool. Much better then the old ones! :-) . I
heard a lot of complaints about how dark it was, but I do think it adds
atmosphere. No one will take us seriously if were the sci-fi society and
we use a 1960's logo!!! :-)) I liked the coloring on the letters as
well, very B5.
As for constructive criticism, maybe it's just the monitor
I'm using, but it looks like it could be cleaned up a bit, made a bit
more professional looking perhaps. Apart form that, I love it.
