Xmas dinner, library and Star Trek film
Ok, sorry about the diverse topics but I can't be bothered to split them up.
First of all, the Library - the current situation as I understand it
(and don't everybody complain at once please) is that the books are
currently stored in boxes at the back of the SU hall. Now the reason for
the move out of Jenny's house was that the SU informed us that as there
were no current students living in the house, the books were not covered
by the SU insurance policy (and please remember that insurance companies
are very specific about what conditions they will pay up (no lectures on
insurance please, my mother is an insurance broker who probably knows a
bit more than you do!)) This means that if the books were damaged in
any way, stolen or otherwise harmed, we would not get the money to
replace them (and as I keep being told by almost everyone, there are some
quite valuable books in our collection) Now, I understand that quite a
few people were upset about not being able to get the books last year, we
(the committee) could not do anything about it as if we removed the books
from the Union we would not get the cupboard and Shams kept "forgetting"
to order it!!! I cannot keep harassing the Clubs and Socs guy as much as
I would like to. However, Kevin and I have a meeting with Dan Brown on
Friday to "discuss" the situation and sort out what we are going to do.
So for all of you who kept saying that nothing would ever be done, it is
being done but slowly, so instead of continually complaining, be
appreciative of all our efforts!!
Now for the Xmas dinner.
This is the current situation and I do need your opinions to at least get
a general picture of IFIS' opinion!!
I phoned the "Mongolian Barbecue" about having our Xmas dinner there but
the only nights that they were willing to let us have our dinner were
Sunday or Monday or any lunch time, so no go there!!
Adam shoudl have spoken to the Rio Grande next to Staines station and I
am waiting to hear what they said. Now, as I am sure you can work out,
the Rio Grande does Mexican food as well as steaks etc.
I have found another restaurant that is not too far away - "The Red
Mobster" (formerly "The Red Lobster") in Sunninghill (which as most of
you know is where my parents live and is not too far from Ascot (between
Ascot and Wentworth Golf Club, actually)) This restaurant does seafood,
steaks and vegetarian options and is doing a Xmas deal of all you can eat
for 8.95 from a choice of dishes and two courses (starters and main).
This proce also includes coffee and possibly liquers.
Any other ideas are gratefully received but please remember that most
members are students and cannot afford expensive meals.
As for the Star Trek film, it is out in the States at the end of November
(26th I think) and I know this as my father is going to see it then and
never fails to remind me of this fact. Now, as the convention is not
happening until the 7th-8th December I think we can take it as read that
the premier is the 6th December and that it goes on general release on
the 13th December. I will organise a trip to see it if there is enough
of a positive response but if there isn't then go see it yourself.
However, I am not worrying about it for a little while yet!
Anyway, see you down the pub on Thursday,
Jacquie
