Con report: Nineworlds Geek fest
A few of you might remember that a few months ago I mentioned that
there was a new geeky convention happening just down the road from us
at Heathrow. Well I went to it and it was pretty awesome if only
because they managed to achieve so much in quite a short amount of
time.
The main problem I'd have with trying to describe how it was, is just
the sheer amount of stuff that was going on at the same time. They
arranged things into "tracks", which I guess are easiest explained as
mini sub-conventions that exist within the overall con. There were
tracks on a whole wide spectrum of stuff, including books, films,
feminism, LGBT, knitting, My Little Pony and gaming to name just a
few. There guests from TV, authors and the scientific community. All
of which was put into a melting pot and served up across two nearby
hotels' conference spaces.
I had a lot of fun on the dance floor trying not to get eaten by a
xenomorph. I learnt how to do realistic bruises and cuts using
ordinary makeup kits. There were some brain melting quizzes, one of
which had a round where team members had to do an impression of Kirk
singing - hopefully my rendition of Sweet Transvestite doesn't ever
see the light of day ;) I discovered new games to play, met all
manner of new people and got to witness various authors and experts
discuss the future of science and SFF. And obviously I spent far too
much in the dealer room.
They plan to have it on again the same weekend every year at the same
hotels and you can already book tickets for next year. If you're
planning on being around, I highly recommend it although it is the
weekend before WorldCon which is being held in London for the first
time in a very long time, so next August could be very expensive if
you take part in all the various cons.
