Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Tuesday 6th March, 7pm, MLT (Founder's Lecture Theater)
Hi all,
It's International Women's Day on Thursday, so to tie in with the
celebrations we're bringing you three episodes of Joss Whedon's
stereotype-busting Buffy the Vampire Slayer. For those of you who don't
know, Buffy is a preppy teenage girl, just trying to get through life at
Sunnydale High School. She is also The Chosen One, born to rid the world of
vampires, demons and the other satanic powers of the night. So it's just a
little unfortunate for Buffy that Sunnydale is situated on the Hellmouth,
which spews these nasties forth without so much as a breather.
We're not in ALT2 this week, but instead we're in the *Main Lecture Theater
in Founder's*. We'll still be starting at 7pm though. Afterwards, we go to
the pub, yes?
Also, elections will be next week. NEXT WEEK. We need a president,
secretary, treasurer and librarian. You'll need to do a short election
speech and answer some questions (so sayeth the SU constitution. All glory
to the constitution.) But if you're interested and have any questions about
what the roles entail, please get in touch with any of the incumbents and
we'll be happy to help.
To sign off, here's a nice little quote from Joss Whedon on Buffy etc;
"So, why do you write these strong women characters?
Because equality is not a concept. Its not something we should be striving
for. Its a necessity. Equality is like gravity, we need it to stand on
this earth as men and women, and the misogyny that is in every culture is
not a true part of the human condition. It is life out of balance and that
imbalance is sucking something out of the soul of every man and women whos
confronted with it. We need equality, kinda now.
So, why do you write these strong female characters?
Because youre still asking me that question."
See y'all tomorrow,
Mohamed
