Towel Day (Douglas Adams members' choice), Tuesday 25th May, 7pm, ALT 2 (Bring a Towel)

Hello all,

As IFIS coincides with Towel Day this year, we will be paying tribute to the
late, great genius that was Douglas Adams. Adams is fondly remembered for
creating the most mind-bogglingly hilarious science-fiction comedy ever -
The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy. But he didn't just write Hitchhiker's,
and spread his talents wider than the endless seas of Santraginous V.

So you have a choice - the original BBC television adaptation of The
Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, or "City of Death", a Tom Baker episode
of Doctor Who from 1979.

Both are equally hoopy.

If you like, you can bring along any other Douglas Adams-y stuff to the
vote, such as the recent movie version of Hitchhiker's.

But don't forget - AND THIS IS VITAL - don't forget your towel. Your lives
may depend upon it.

City of Death is 4 episodes, not one. Don't be scared by the writer's
credit reading David Agnew - it's a BBC in house pseudonym covering that it
was written by two BBC staffers - Adams and the producer Graham Williams -
in a great rush.

Douglas wrote another broadcast story, Pirate Planet, which is rather good.
His influence can be felt on the other stories in Season 17 - especially the
fabulous Destiny of the Daleks but also Creature from the Pit, Nightmare of
Eden & Horns of the Nimon. All bar Nightmare... are on DVD.

work commenced on a final story, Shada,written by Douglas himself. However
it was cancelled due to strike action. Elements were latter recycled in
Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency.

Shada was also re-recorded in full as a radio play by Big Finish Productions, slightly re-jigged to feature Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor. It works very well.
