I would heartily recommend that all
IFIS members read the 6 Dune books,
as they are some of the best SF ever written IMHO.
Hmm.
They start out good, and end up good, but they're utterly dire in the middle.
"God Emperor of Dune" describes with mind-numbing realism the progress of
several thousand years of utter tedium.
Damn shame he had the poor timing to die before finishing the series.
(But then again, it might just have saved us all some terrible disappointments.
Zelazny's second Amber series is a wonderful example of a glorious beginning,
and a tragic ending.)
