Brazil is a film on a number of levels, but the easiest way to explain it is
"rather like 1984 as directed by Terry Gillam". In other words the same
director as "Time Bandits", "The Fisher King", or "Twelve Monkeys". In fact
there are quite a few similarities between the future world presented in
"Brazil" and the future world presented in "Twelve Monkeys", at least as
regards the set design and direction.
One little teaser that does cause reasonable argument among "Brazil"
afficionadoes is this: at what point does the film start to slip away into
madness? I like an answer reported to me as belonging to Darren - something
like "well, you know that scene with the man chasing the fly around that
pristine office, climbing over the complicated machine ... well, it's about
five minutes before that." If you actually go and see the film, you will
see why I like this answer.
The other thing you might like to laugh about is the fact that the original
UA cut of this film, for the American market, loses the last minute or so.
Dave Chilard, in particular, will enjoy the reflections that this suggests
about the American filmgoing public. (Sorry, Dave, it's true. But argue
with me when you've seen the film, OK?)
I can't think of anything more to say that isn't either a spoiler or
apparently-outrageous praise. Or possibly both. This film is a must-see.
See it.
(If you haven't seen it, don't read anything else on this thread until
Friday, because someone will post a spoiler on this list. I am willing to
make bets on which two people it will be - but in private...)
