I sense you've not heard the story .......
Summer of my first year, 1992. We used to drink in a pub called the Royal
Ascot. Now the Monkey's Foreskin. Dave the Landlord used to try to
encourage traffic from the races. So there's us - I forget exactly who but
I think there were just 6 of us..... Me, NickWa, Simon Banks, Simon
Richardson, Patric...... Possibly Nigel ? All sitting down the far end
of the bar deprived of our usual seats.
A minibus draws up outside. In walks slightly inebriated male toff.
"Please don't take the p!$$ out of my wife's hat". In walks the hat and
owner - see link below.
There may have been a packet of peanuts already on the table, but my memory
has it that Simon Banks was the one who walked to the bar and bought a few
packets. So we sat in the corner trying to throw peanuts into the top of
this thing.
Years go by, story fades into memory, told on by those who were there to
disbelieving others as the origin of the
IFIS annual peanut throwing
competition.
Then while rummaging through a box of videos I found the highlights of Day 1
of Lords 92. It started late and before it I found some Ascot highlights
with the hat featuring in a fashion parade. Tape was passed to Assan who
did the business for us.
So when you're having a drink on Thursday, think of the hat and order a
packet of peanuts. I prefer honey roasted.
