Some may remember an article I wrote - DW for a Y2K audience (
http://www.rwav.
ifis.org.uk/issues/2000autumn/4.shtml ) which talked about
reintroducing the series. I was interested that what we saw tonight was a basic
stripping of the concept down to basics and taking it back to it's roots.
Personally I thought the episode did a great job of introducing everything. It
starts with a recognisable scenario (present day earth and england) and situation
(girl working in a shop and living on a council estate) and then takes us on a
journey with Rose as things go a bit odd and this strange man walks into her life.
In this respect there's an awful lot in common with an Unearthly Child, and to
introduce the show to a new audience you couldn't have chosen a better template.
Rose learns some stuff about him, but there's a lot more to learn ( as we the viewer
know ) Through her eyes we get introduced to first the Doctor and then the
Tardis..... in fact the entire episode is done from her point of view and the only
times we leave her it's through the eyes of another human - with the exception of the
very brief insert in the living room. Eccelstone spends no time on screen by
himself, we only ever see him with Rose. It only told us what we needed to know now,
hinted at other stuff: wars and that the doctor hadn't seen his face before but these
are all asides from the main thrust of what's happening. Doubtless if it becomes
relevent we'll find out more....
The Alien Invasion here isn't the main thrust of the plot until the very end - it
serves as a reason to get the Doctor back to Earth and as a reason for him to meet
Rose. As such it feels slightly under done but serves it's purpose.
As an intro this has more than done it's stuff..... now let's see where we go with
what we have.

Apart from the unscheduled cameo by Graham Norton (someone on the Outpost
Gallifrey forum has already suggested "Terror of the Nortons" as an
alternative title), I thought it was bl00dy excellent! Particularly liked
the bits involving the London Eye, and when Rose is asking the Doctor about
his name and he goes "helloooo!" and waves at her.
