To spoil or not to spoil.....

An interesting question - when should you use spoilers or not......

How about the following ?

TV: Well if you didn't watch it when it was shown on Terrestrial TV you're
generally going to have seen it on video within a week or so. So very
little time here ....

Satelite/Cable: Depends if it will be on Terrestrial TV. If yes, then
until it pops up. If no then as above. Most of the ex members are now
armed with some method of getting non terrestrial stuff

Film: Film is a little more difficult, but probably within a month of it
being released everyone will have seen it and know what happens.

It's probably reasonable to expect that those who want to have seen Star
Wars, Next Generation or read the previous 25 Pratchett novels so no need
here I think ;-)

I reckon where there is a heavy twist, people should be restrained and not
tell. But for most films, it's not a problem. I just think that if you
are going to start discussing a film that hasn't even come out yet, a big
spoiler space should be left. It's all very well saying "Oh, well, the
original has been out for thirty years" and yes, you may be a long time
hardened Sci-Fi and film fan, but not all of us are. I didn't even know I
liked Sci-fi until about 1997 (although strangely, I had joined IFIS
anyway...), and I've got a lot of catching up to do. Even films I have
tried to watch have not always worked out - I don't want anybody spoiling
the end of 2001 for me, as I am sure I will stay awake for it at least once
in my lifetime :o)

I think it's probably reasonable to discuss films which have been shown by
IFIS on a Thursday night, unless they have a particular twist. The Sixth
Sense is probably one of those films.

I think that there is no reason to lay down rules about spoilers as long as
people use common sense. Ask yourself how many people are likely to have
seen/read/heard it and then ask yourself how annoyed would you be if someone
had spoiled it for you? That should be enough to work out if you need
spoiler space or not.

Of course, one easy way to do it is to move to a place where you get nearly
all this stuff first - then any emails you send back automatically require
spoiler space!

An interesting answer - "not". As in "ever".

You protect spoilers with spoiler-space and good labelling, always.
It doesn't cost you anything to do it.
There are FAR TOO MANY people here who have not seen "Ultraviolet",
which was on TV 2 years ago. Sooner or later we will introduce a
fresh crop to Babylon 5. Spoiler space is required.
Same argument.
Wrong again. Three years ago I met someone who had not seen any
of the Star Wars films, not because she hated the idea but because
she'd never got around to it. Now admittedly she was a foreign
student ... but colonials count too. :-p


One of the functions of IFIS is introducing those strange deprived
firstyears who have been brought up by clones to the wild and
wonderful world of SF. That means that you cannot assume such a
thing - they may discover Prat-chett in their first term, and work
their way through the books over the course of their first academic
year. Spoilers will not be appreciated - and next year there will
be a fresh crop of freshers struggling to escape their clone
roots.


The whole "how long should spoilers be left" argument is nonsense.
You wouldn't want spoilers for, say, "Quatermass and the Pit" or
"The Birds", to pick two older films. You certainly wouldn't want
them for "Ring", a piece of Japanese horror that is slowly
but deservedly acquiring a cult following among the cognoscenti.
Or "Brazil", or "Dark Star", or "Ghostbusters" or "Terminator 2"
(no, my foreign student hadn't seen that either.)

You put labels and spoiler space on spoilers, or the Enforcers
will come visit your kneecaps with baseball bats. Big baseball
bats.

For some reason, it's achieved some kind of "cult" status. Maybe people
enjoy watching it for the same reason they enjoy laughing at how utterly
dire "attack of the killer tomatoes" is, or something... that said, I
love 2001 and a lot of other people seem to utterly fail to appreciate
THAT.

In Dark Star's credit, though... It was shown in an IFIS video evening
many years ago, and some girl called Estelle (who I vaguely knew) was so
utterly bored, she fell asleep partway through the film, on my shoulder,
and the rest is history but now she's obviously my wife and mother of my
daughter. I can't pretend Dark Star was the ONLY factor that brought us
together, or even the most significant, but it possibly helped a lot.

Is it even possible to "spoil" dark star?

These guys fly around doing essentially the same as the yellow
bulldozers in H2G2, but less amusingly. They keep a beach-ball as a pet.
They play pretty tunes on an organ-thing made out of bottles of water
(probably the 2nd most watchable part of the film). They have a
spaced-out crewmember who never ever ever comes down from the
observation deck any more. They have an AI bomb, which is going to
explode - they stop it's countdown by teaching it philosophy, but it
says "I think therefore I am, let there be light" and explodes (the only
other watchable bit of the film), and the only surviving hippie beach
bum surfs down through the atmosphere on a surfboard made of some bit of
the wreckage, presumably to his death.

As far as I can tell, that's the whole of the film, there is no real
story, it's just the last couple of days of boring life aboard a boring
space-ship with a boring job. I have saved you. now you don't have to
watch it.
