ST:Enterprise

Hmmmm. Sorry been busy all day and not enough time to respond. Interesting
day .....

The Scott Bakula thing is a little old news - in last months TV Zone IIRC.
Interesting choice as he's closely associated with another sci fi series.
Can't remember him being in much post QL with the exception of the failed
Invaders remake. I still think it's him in ESB though !

Deborah Pratt (who does Ziggy's voice, was Morella in Airwolf (and wrote the
best ep Fallen Angel) and is also the former wife of Donald Bellisario ) would
make a decent computer voice.

Have they decided to go with past Trek - hard to see how they'd squeeze another
Enterprise in pre NCC1701 - or Future Trek (post TNG, DS9 & V)

Difficult to see where they they coud take the series whichever end of the

human beings, regardless of age, gender, religion, economic status or
ethnic background, is that, deep down inside, we ALL believe that we
are above-average drivers.

Well we know of 6 Star Fleet ships named Enterprise. We know that NCC 1701 is the
first - all vessels with the same name have the succeeding registries. So I can't see how
there can be an enterprise before that. And I have difficulty seeing how they could
style the series as well so it looked futuristic and yet predates ST:TOS.

Well there's an easy get-out for the naming problem. Dump the serial number.
Ship names have long been passed down through successive generations of
ships. Some of the ships in today's Royal Navy have been in use on and off
since Napoleonic times (Illustrious and Invincible spring to mind). I doubt
they carried the same serial numbers.

As I think about this a bit more there has already been a precedent for this
in Star Trek. Can anyone else think of it?

NX2000 to NCC2000 (I think that is what it was changed to).

Excelsior is a special case - it's labelled as NX because it's an experimental vessel when
we first see it in STIII. By the time of VI The Excelsior *class* has gone into
production - look how many are still around at the time of TNG and DS9, and the Excelsior
*ship* is formally in service.

IIRC The Defiant also has an X number, is also a prototype and is also what the class gets
named after. There may be something in the TNG tech manual about this sort of thing
relating to the Galaxy class vessel.

Anyhow we know that there can't be an X vessel named Enterprise - as there's already an
Enterprise class of vessel named after the modified constitution class NCC 1701 that's
seen in ST:MP-ST:III. The same ship also has a mural of previous Enterprises - including
both the aircraft carrier and the space shuttle - which is visible in the rec deck scene
in MP. I must get my copy of MP down - after tonight's BTVS - and see what else is on
the wall - a sailing vessel and a space station IIRC.

I know I know, I've seen it. They've also done it twice in Voyager, I was
just making the traditional joke.

The Defiant is an odd one as well - there was a Constitution Class ship in
the TOS episode 'The Tholian Web' called the USS Defiant (NCC-1764), and
I've heard people ask why Sisko's Defiant didn't have the registry
NCC-1764-A or whatever.

Somewhere there's a copy of my DC Star Trek who's who that's got a listing of all the TOS
ships and registry. There's probably one in the ST omnipedia too.

Actually the "Enterprise Class" vessel was never cannon (Official) it was
never called Enterprise Class in a film or episode (Books are not considered
cannon even when official and facts in books can be changed by episodes or
films). It was Enterprise class in a technical manual but that was not
considered cannon Richard Arnold (who was "research consultant" continuity
expert on TNG see credits before season 5 TNG) argued all that years ago. It
does appear to have been called constitution II in some of the paramount
writers background information.

According to the front intro bit, which gives specifications, requirements
and so on for the new class of starship, known as _Galaxy_-class, several
were built, and are currently in service today.

The Enterprise was the 3rd (I think) to be built, not including the original
UFP Galaxy, after which the class is named.

Different technical manual. You have the Next generation technical manual.
The "Enterprise class" was mentioned as being the post refit (Star Trek the
motion Picture) in a technical manual for the Movie enterprises (Kirk,
Spock, et al).

The information in the next generation about the Galaxy Class Enterprise
(Picard, Riker, Data et al) (Okuda if I am remembering correctly) is
correct. Mention was made to those facts in the series including the one
where geordi recreates the Utopia Planetia testing centre (I cant remember
the name of the Episode). Where the Galaxy was being tested. Most of the
early Galaxy Class if not all have been destroyed by or during the time of
the next movies as they lost two or three a series.
Troi of course crashed the Enterprise Galaxy class (Oh, I am not going to
make comments about women drivers or I might get lynched :o) )

The TNG manual has a section on the 5 ships to bear the name Enterprise. What does it
say about the A's class ?

I think you guys are talking about different ships here. The TOS Enterprise
was a Constitution, the TNG Enterprise was a Galaxy.

The Spanish Armada attacked in 1588, BTW. So that's over 400 years
to use the same name. Unimaginative lot, the Sea Lords.

I see your pt, but we do have an established convention in trek about Star Fleet serial
numbers, and especially on vessels named Enterprise. I'll concede that a pre Star Fleet
series would avoid this problem.....

I think a pre-TOS series would be cool. It could be
set about 20 years after ST 8: First Contact, so
Earth's early relationship to the Vulcans could be
explored a bit more. It might feature the crew
meeting many of the alien species we know for the
first time. Just think of the diplomatic incident
potential, and the ensuing wars that follow! lots of
explosions!

He was also in the TV special NetForce based on Tom Clancy's books (it was
either 1999 or 2000), the third Major League film (I was surfing through the
200 odd cable channels and caught a bit of it), a couple of pilots as well
as some guest spots in other shows (mind you, the weirdest of people show up
in those over here).

I'd like to see an 'Early days of Warp Technology' setting, where ships have
no shields and blow up periodically for absolutely no reason. And
inefficient guns and missiles. And a hull that is impossible to clean,
getting dirtier as the series progresses. And a warp core ejection system
that never works. (Oh wait, that last one's been done already)

That's not Star Trek, that's Railtrack.

How about adding in a unionised crew who won't boldly go anywhere on a
Friday because they object to the uniforms?
