ex-students and accompanying arguments

In the hunt for some back-ground on the debate currently raging
on the subject of changes in voting regulations for ex-students (and
for a bit of a laugh) I decided to have a poke around through Nick's
lovingly maintained e-mail archives.
For reasons I can't quite remember anymore I ended up in the
earliest entries, those from the time when there was only one list.
It was brilliant, here were all the same people posting about all
the same subjects, just doing it five years ago! It was a bit like
being in an Escher painting.

the archives. Almost all of us "oldies" have also been on the "other

is exatly what happenned 4, 5, 7, 10 years ago, none of the students
believe us. In 5 years time, many of you will be looking back and
laughing too!

So tell me then... What can be done to stop the society from going
around and around and around? How can we break the vicious circle?

Ban all oldbies once they stop being students. NOTE I am in NO WAY SAYING
that this should be done. It might break the cycle, but it's a STUPID idea,
since the oldbies are an essential part of this society. ;)

I'm in favour of the third argument. Do nothing. I think the vicious circle
arangement seems to be working nicely, and there is a sufficient drop-off
rate in the old members to make sure that they will never outnumber the
students. Of course if one side or another gains too much power we will have
to have one of our periodic civil wars, but that's half the fun of it.

My geology teacher used to say 'the present is the key to the past' (i
think) looks to me to be quite the otherway round, seems if were all
historians we might be able to do something constructive if we weren't
spending ALL our time studying history, alternatively we could continue
repeating ourselves ad infinitum.

What a good job mankind doesn't inherit memories like in scifi movies, we
might then be something other than the ammended 'mostly harmless'
