Tripods DVD

Hoooray! Who remembers watching the Tripods on the BBC on a saturday?

The double DVD containing all thirteen episodes has been initially set for a
Region2 release on 19th march 2001!

I remember it better than you do cos they made 25 episodes !

There'd be 13 is Series1 (The White Mountains, which has been previously
released on Video by the Beeb) and 12 in Series2 (City of Gold and Lead,
which hasn't)

ah yes, I had neglected to mention that the 13 episodes were from series 1.

Incidentally, how many tripod books were there? I remember there being the
novel trilogy, and also 'when the tripods came'. Were there ever any others?

I think the 3 Trilogy books are the only proper ones - is When the Tripods
came by someone else ?

I've got quite a bit of material on the Tripods here - one of the mags I buy
was very keen on the subject. Lots of nice images.....

err no actually, written by John Christopher himself. It's a very good book
from what I remember, sort of like a Phantom menace for the tripods series,
except much better :) It was written aimed at children however, so it's not
quite as dense as the other 3 novels.

hmmm I might ponder ordering the compilation off amazon, it's only a
tenner..

I wasn't so impressed with When the Tripods came. It felt like a rip-off of
War of the Worlds done for kids.

However if you like stuff by John Christopher I can recommend the 'Prince in
Waiting' trilogy. Book 1 was called The Prince in Waiting, but I'm damned if
I can rmember what the other two were called.

That's the ones. The title "Beyond the Burning Lands" (the third book) came
to me on the train this morning, but I forgot it until now. I think the
second one was called "Sword of the Spirits" or something similar.

Just on a sort of tangent to this "post-apocalypse and technophobic Britain"
theme, I could recommend the Changes Trilogy (The Devil's Children,
Heartsease, The Weathermonger) by Peter Dickinson as something along the
same lines. One morning the whole of mainland Britain wakes up, goes mad,
smashes everything technological, and reverts to the Dark Ages. Fun to
remember when your computer crashes for the nth time in an hour. :-)

And the BBC did a serialisation of that too, when I was kid, in a weekday
children's slot, though very much for older children. Must have been
mid-70s.

Speaking of which the BBC shop in Epsom has recently had in the video of the BBC
production of "Day of the Triffids" - which like the Tripods has not been seen
for many a year .....

Or vice versa, I would imagine. I've read lots of John Wyndham, but
nothing of John Christophers. I must keep an eyeball open.

Actually, while we're on the subject, does anybody have any copies
of the Hunted Earth series of books by Roger Macbride Allen? Yes, the same
man that wrote the Star Wars books. I read a review of them, and want to lay
my grubby little hands on them to see what they're like for myself.
