Encounter
"Ace!" The Doctor hissed, grabbing his companion's jacket sleeve. "Don't
move!"
Ace froze. The forest was cold and dark, the shadows twisting into strange
shapes, creatures of darkness that surrounded them. And suddenly, there they
were...men at least eight foot tall in armour as black as night, armed with
swords and clubs and other nasty things. The Lead Knight glared down at the
Doctor and Ace as his followers chattered and gabbled insanely.
The Doctor straightened his hat and glared back. "Who are you?"
In an absurdly shrill, high-pitched voice, the Lead Knight shrieked:
"We are the Knights who say...Ni!"

But since you've got us onto Doctor Who a hearty recommendation for Father
Time by Lance Parkin which is one of the best Who novels I've ever read.
