harry potter trip

To those of you who weren't at the pub or whatever here are some lovely
details about going to see the chamber of secrets.

We can get tickets to a special advanced preview on the 14th of November
which is before the premiere-I reckon we can take 30ish people. If you fancy
coming along email me and I'll sort it all out.

Sorry but there isn't as the union has banned them unitl further notice
however if you go along to ALT at 7ish then Sian (the secretary) will be
there to take people's names for the HP trip.

Why exactly has the union banned them, though?
I still don't understand. The psychology soceity is still allowed film
nights, and ifis has been doing these for years. what has suddenly changed?
It makes no damn sense!
The again, the idiots running it (the union, not ifis!) this year seem even
worse than usual.

Its true-yes we and other socities who show films have been allowed up until
now. But the film laws have changed and until I get a call from the union
telling me what they are and what I can do -we just have to wait. You'll
find that films are being stopped throughout all societies-if it carries on
too long-the word illegal comes to mind.. mwa ha ha or possibly not.

I've always suspected we might be on somewhat dodgy ground here anyway..... Bit
surprised the union never never took a interest till now. IIRC it was checked a
couple of times and they said it's OK. Oh well, you'll all have to drink more
beer instead.

What about the laws governing public screening of television programmes? I'm not sure if it is the same, but might IFIS be able to show videos of things such as Doctor Who or the League of Gentlemen?

Covered by the same copyright IIRC - the messages at the start of BBC videos etc
are similar enough to the ones at the start of fox stuff (SW).. In fact the
fox SW & Simpsons are the same. It's not the origin of the media that's
important, it's the unlicensed showing of it....

Not my favourite character. Personally I thought the 4th episode with the
Hotelier was the best so far. I missed the first 10 minutes of tonight's when
it was on BBC Choice last week but what I saw was good.

I understand some overpaid lawyer, on behalf of some big movie industry =
association, has sent threattenning letters to the union. The union, =
being unable to afford all but the cheapest lawyers, is unsure of what =
to do until they can be proved legal, so is temporarily banning all =
viewings, just in case.

It's a common tactic. You don't even need to have any real legal basis, =
you just need to employ a good enough lawyer who can threatten things =
based on all sorts of unfounded justifications, and if your defendant =
can't afford legal advice, they'll probably stop whatever they're doing =
even if they have every right to be doing it. The poorer defendant could =
stand up to it, and risk fines and fees that could bankrupt them for =
years, with no legal support, or they could spend their life savings to =
employ a lawyer to tell them they're entirely legal, or they can give up =
and do whatever the bullies wanted them to do. :-(
