THIS WEEK'S FILM: Spaceballs!

This Thursday, IFIS are finally showing Spaceballs: The Movie. I could fill
up this entire announcement with quotes from this mighty comedy, but, er,
I've got loads of other stuff to write so I won't. It's a spoof of Star
Wars, it's by Mel Brooks and it's quite fantastically brilliant. Yes, I like
this film :)

That's Thursday 22nd November, Founders MLT as always.

If you have seen, and/or for some unfathomable reason don't want to see
Spaceballs, then there's also the IFIS Social, which starts at the same time
and is still being held in The Beehive... to get there, head halfway down
Egham Hill, left into Middle Hill, and The Beehive is halfway back up on
your right.

The IFIS Library is open on Wednesday from 1pm to 3pm, in Times Square; Mr.
Giles the Librarian will be there to assist people in matters of temporary
literary acquisition; thousands of great books, free for IFIS members to
borrow.

And finally... IFIS SHOPPING TRIP...
It's this Saturday (24th November). We'll be meeting at Egham train station
at 10 am. There will be two groups shuffling about - one will be doing the
traditional route of comic shops and Forbidden Planet; the other will be
doing shoppy stuff in Camden and thereabouts. We'll be stopping at Richmond
on the way to go to "They Walk Among Us" sci-fi shop, which (I am told) was
also the location for the Comic Shop scenes in Spaced. Later in the evening
we plan to go to Pages Bar, which is a sci-fi pub in London.

Phew. So... Thursday, Spaceballs -- Wednesday, Library -- Saturday, Shopping
Trip.

Which train are you going to be on ? I'm intending to meet you at Richmond and would like
to be there in time !

And how long do you intend being in Richmond for (and thus which train will you be on from
there) so we know what time we'll be at Waterloo for the likes of Mr Wren to join us ?
TWAU has moved since S2 of Spaced but we can go via the old location just so everyone can
see it. There's a place in there now which does wargaming miniatures.

Well if you allow an hour in Richmond and assume we'll be on the 11:43 to Waterloo (that's
the 11:21 for those starting from Egham a little late) we'll be at Waterloo at Midday.
(Wren, take note !) How's that sound Adam ?

Traditionally we've hung around there for half an hour or so, grabbed some lunch,
collected people and lost people.

It might sound horribly organised but there's always a few stragglers who like to meet up
with us up there !

Gatsis done up as a Tong leader ....

I've got this weeks on tape but it's just about to get borrowed. I've also
still got the Randall and Hopkirks you wanted but Sandie's borrowed the
tape and I won't see her before Saturday to get it back. I do know UK
play have been showing them so all is not lost yet.

Incidentally Saturday has the 7th (and last) episode of Randall & Hopkirk
on by Mark Gatsis and Jeremy Dyson (LoG) featuring Steve Pemberton (Log)
and directed by Steve Bendilack (again director LoG). I think we know
what to expect..... Dave.

Can't we just skip richmond completly and just meet at waterloo? Give us
more time at more interesting places? Or should we just split the group at
egham... those wanting to goto richmond go, others go else where?

Good idea. Then we'll have three or four small groups spread over most of
London. In fact why don't we split up into groups of one and go shopping
that way? At least we wouldn't have to worry about whether anyone else
wanted to see these places.

I'll be at Waterloo at around midday, where I hope to meet some people who
enjoy sharing the experience that is the IFIS shopping trip.

you read my nind.... the more smaller groups the better... we could then
have specialised parties going to the places they want to go. As long as
we end of in one place at the end of the nite, then it should all be fine.

I propose to have at least 20 small groups... some heading down to
brighton if possible... *8)
*8) stop it, my ribs hurt from the laughter. Not all IFIS people want to
do the same thing on the shopping trip, anway, you can share "the
experience" by going to other places too you know. i enbjoy sharing "the
experience", and enjoy it even more when we goto nicer places... who
knows, maybe you'll end up in what ever group I end being with, then we'll
see how much you enjoy it ;-)

So we agree then. We all split up, and if by chance anyone can't find their
way round or know where Page's is, then its their own fault. After all if
they'd come on an IFIS shopping trip they'd know where these places are.

We really aught to spend longer getting to Waterloo if anything. There's
a really great sci fi book shop called "At the sign of the Dragon" in Sheen
(near to Mortlake station, cross the road at the level crossing and turn
right walking away from it without crossing) that's well worth a visit and
on the route from Egham to London. As far as I know we've never visited
it on mass *mainly* cos it's too small to get us all in. But if anyone's
out on the train for a day shopping I highly recommend paying them a visit
and leaving considerably poorer.
Brighton if possible... *8)

IIRC correctly Forbidden Planet used to have a franchise in Brighton.

Is it still there ?

What other shops selling science fiction books/comics/merchandise * are
there which would warrant a visit ?

I think he means places other than SciFi Stuff shops. Which is why
I thought there should be one group going to Camden for stuff like that.
East to the Who Shop (Adam - bring the address and I might come out
that way with you for a look)

All I know is that its in East Ham and opposite the train station.

Its perfectly possible. However I don't recommend visiting Brighton in
winter. Its cold and large parts of it are closed. I don't think you'd have
much chance to see stuff before heading back to Page's, but if you want I
can provide you with a list of places you really must visit.
There was still a Hive in the North Lanes when I last visited, but I've
never found an FP. In fact the closest FP to Brighton I know of is in
Croydon.

I'm not that desperate darling.

That was never the suggestion... but think you me and andy could have lots
of fun.. we can goto the beach... visit the FP there... and still have
time to get to pages bar for last orders!

This may well be the case - used should have been underlined. I'll get some of my old UK
Star Wars mags out and check the ads in there.

At one pt FP had a fair few places all over the country - including the legendary FP 1 & 2
in Central London - 1 was the comics, 2 was the books. They merged back in ..... 90 ish
sometime (Chris L: help me out here - was it one big FP by the time you came down)

There also used to be a VERY good comic place called Paradise Alley in the same vicinity
(Denmark St). When we ran the 94 trip there was another shop across the road - also now
gone as is the comic shop in Virgin.

And I'll take a brief moment to mourn the Book Inn/Fantasy Inn on Charring Cross road -
destroyed by fire about 8 years ago now.

Then there was Messers Ross and Gambacinni's comic emporium - and I forget what that was
called. And somewhere up in Marble arch too......

I do believe there was/is a place in Camden though I know not where it is for the life of
me !

Those who want to skip richmond could leave Egham on the 11.21 train
from Egham as Mr. Phil suggested. that way they could get a lie in and then
meet us at Richmond as we board the train.
