Is an English Lesson Necessary ? [was Bible-thumping]

I'm hoping that was just an excuse to deploy a poor attempt at humour but
given the state of English in our Schools today ....

True story: When I was at secondary school my English Teacher did not know
what it meant to "sack" a town or city.

I can't find a dictionary definition - my brother has taken the only one in
his room to University with him on the spurious grounds that he's doing an
English degree - but I imagine they'd define someone being an alien as being
"unlike you, a foreigner" something of that nature ...
